I just bought my first 250r and finally got it running sorta. I cleaned the carb several times and it doesn't help. We had to pull start it to get it to fire and then you have to keep on the gas at all times at minimum of 1/4 throttle. It has no take off power what so ever you put it in first and you have to slip the clutch a LOT and have to be on at least 1/2 throttle or more. It is extremly high geared feeling. I am not sure what stock gearing is but the front is a 14t and rear says 36t. Any one know what stock gearing is the front appears to be stock sproket but the rear is a sunpro. Thanks

I know somebody has got to have a clue on why this thing is almost impossible to get running. I'm getting really sick of this thing right now.Hoosier Daddy

When was the last time it ran and how did it run then?Could be a few things, bad compression, bad fuel mix...

I have no Idea I just bought it at an auction never met the owner. It looks like it has been rebuilt it has compression. I will put new gas in it. I have another Thread on it when I bought it http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?125218-FINALLY-got-a-250r-deal-of-the-CENTURY-(HUGE-pics)(LONG-post) it shows pics and such.

Yes,very good recondition. Where is the needle set at? How many turns out is the airscrew and idle screw?

needles on the 3rd one just like stock the airscrew is at 1 1/2 now and the idle is 3 i think can't remember i've tried several ones. the slow jet is 50 the main is 128. If I had to take a guess I'd say it's not getting enough fuel or good fuel one of the two. I'm not good with carbs at all and have no idea what i'm doing with them so any advice is appreciated.

3 turns out for the idle needle sounds like a lot to me... But it shouldn't be keeping the bike from not running fully. Is the choke on?
that gearing seems a little tall, but still should kick start just fine, Your carb sounds like it should be close adjustment wise, If the Cylinder porting hasnt been fooled with ( in the wrong way) i would take a close look at your Magneto, stator, and timing, sounds like some serious corrosion or very weak mags in the magneto. This is what i would be looking at after the basics, Compression test, Fresh fuel, New plug, clean carb, clean air filter, Check exaust for Larg holes, ect and a check of the ignition system.

The stock gearing is 13t front 42t rear.

If the idle is out that far, jetting could go up 1-2 sizes.

what should I move the idle to and just to be sure the idle screw is the big on with the knurled edges.

how would I do this??? never messed with this stuff before.

The idle screw is generally on the side, and it directly affects the slide inside the carb.
Also, look up one of the service manuals here on the site. It should go into detail on how to get to the stator.

if you had to pull it to start it im gonna have to say its a compression issue.

Raise the needle inside the slide one notch and see what happens and idle is around 1 1/2 turns out.

i'll give that a try I just took all the old gas out of the tank and put fresh in, washed it out with gas, installed a inline fuel filter, and all new hoses even though the old hoses looked fine. I think I'm going to get a 130 main jet too thats what the clymer manual says is stock on it.

you could try the new jet, but there is a different exhaust on it so...

I'll get a couple sizes and see if it even makes a difference. Are you supposed to go up in sizes for new exhaust and no airbox.

Well apparently it hasn't been rebuilt cause whoever said compression was right it tested 55. I'll pop the head and see how bad it is hopefully I can get away with new rings. Do you have to replace the head gasket every time even if it looks good.

well I found the problem it's been blown up  I'll post pic sometime I can't belive ieven got it to run I probably just made it worse. It kinda looks like like the front of the pistons melted and then it hit the head with little bits of piston ring. It going to have to be bored out at least one size. It just keeps getting better and better.
