I want to buy a 200x top end for my 185s. i read a few threads about doing this and i wanted a little bit more detail. would i need the whole 200x top engine, or could i just put the 200x piston and gaskets on my 185? i dont know how stupid this question sounds but jw. thanks guys

I know you can just swap out the cams. Get a stock 200x cam and ive heard it helps on the 185.

Going from a 185 to a 200, you wont really notice an increase in power like you would think. The 185 is actually 180cc, and 200 is 193cc, so 13cc's difference. I wouldnt bother putting a 200x top end on, power wise its not worth it to go up 13cc, unless you were to run a higher compression piston, like 10:1. I know the 200x cam and carb is an upgrade over the stock 185, but if you want much peppier power, drop in a xr 200 cam, and xr 200 carb, better breathing air filter like uni in airbox style, and your choice of a performance pipe. I did this to my 84 auto X, and it flies compared to even a stock 200x, and it has a 185 motor. I have also heard the XR 200 head is better too, because it has a larger intake (?) valve. I havnt tried it yet, but is on the list for a rainy day.

You can usually find a good used 200x or xr 200 cam on ebay for around $30. The cam swap is super easy, just look in the manual. You dont even have to take the head off, just the side CDI cover, and pulse rotor and pickup, then loosen the two bolts holding the sprocket to the camshaft, hook a wire through the timing chain so it dosent fall, then take the chain off the sprocket, and pull out the cam. When re-assembling, be sure to follow the manual for the timing setting, and make sure to adjust the rocker arm clearance, you have to do this as the new cam will have bigger lobes. Its real easy, and you cant go wrong if you follow the manual. Good luck, and post when the time comes and you find you need help.
