View Full Version : Honda atc 250r clutch problem!

I recently got a deal on an 86' . Thing is in awesome shape and runs perfect. It has some sort of clutch issue. It doesnt seem to be fully engaging. I bought new plates and springs and that didnt help... Could it be a bad cable? does anyone have pictures of what the bottom cable adjuster should look like, I don't believe mine has the right one. or could something else be the problem?:(

What exactly is it doing? Slipping? Or just notchy to get in neutral?

Slipping. its brand new clutch plates ( i bought them before taking it apart assuming they were the issue) come to find out the old ones still looked good. If i adjust both adjusters to engage as much as possible it will engage slightly ( enough to move it but its still slipping). I think the bottom adjuster is the wrong one( it doesn't look factory to me) . The new clutch cables appear to come with a new adjuster. The bracket off the engine bolt for the adjust is there still though. Should this bracket be threaded? what is the bottom adjuster suppose to consist of?

When i let the clutch out it doesnt even start to grab till the very end and even then it doesnt grab enough

Its deffinatly something with the cable, wether adjusted incorrectly, incorect mounting piece, or stretched cable. It sounds like it is too tight by the description, like the lever on the motor isnt returning all the way. An easy way to tell if it is cable orientated, disconnect the cable, and have someone give you a push to get rolling, then shift into gear. If the clutch dosent slip, you know it had to be the cable. If it does, then its something under the right side cover. Good luck!

That's exactually what I was thinking. It must be the cable. I'm going to try that this weekend. It's at my brothers house. Will take pictures while I'm there! That's got the help

Generally if the clutch is slipping when fully released it is becuase the cable is pulling on the arm in the case too much. Or there is some mechanical issue in the engine with the clucth itself.

A sticky cable is definately likely and easy to diagnose. Just unhook the cable at both levers and the braided inner portion of the cable should move freely from end to end with no binding.

There is a bracket right below the jug. One nut goes on one side of the bracket, and the other nut at the other side. That bracket is not threaded.
Wind in you clutch lever screw almost all the way at the bars, then hook up your cable at the engine lever and get your rough adjustment in with the 2 threaded nuts on the cable at the engine bracket. Then adjust your clutch lever screw to obtain the proper slack in the cable.
Generally there should be a nickles thin edge worth of free play between the clutch lever and bracket at the bars.
If you have constant tension on the cable, it will weld the push rod to that actuator arm in the case..And that sucks.
