I finally got a 1983 250r its my first one and I know next to nothing about it. First off I'll start the awsome story. I went to an auction thursday because I saw they had a 250r in the listing in they had it labeled as a honda 250 atc. I bet the guy that put it in the auction is mad. He put it in an auction in the middle of winter at a auction with nick nacks some tools and other junk in the middle of a record Blizzard not his finest choice:twisted:. They were scheduled to sell it at 12:00 sharp so I showed up with my dad at 11:00 better to be early so I can check it out. They get done selling the rack that there on and a guy starts pushing the atc out through the floor. I thought he was pushing it up to sell NOPE he pushed it right outt he door and to his truck. Then my dad comes along and sees the guy and said he new him. So we ran after him we started talking to him and he got it for 500.00 thats right a misily 500.00 for a restored mostly mint 1983 250r. I almost died he said they sold it an hour before we got there. it was just mainly a bunch of old people at the auction and nobody wanted it. He said he didn't really want it but couldn't stand to let it go for that. So I needless to say almost cryed on the spot. We went on are way home made a couple of stops along the way and I walked in the door and on the answering machine was the guy asking me if I wanted to buy it. I couldn't belive it we jumped in the truck and went to his house and he said all he wanted to make on the deal was 25.00 :D It cost him 525.00 by the time he got done with the taxes so I got it for 550.00. So I basically feel like I won the lottery.

I'm missing the headlight, tailight, grab bar, shock boots, air box, a frame rubber that the seat sits on, the front brakes, parking brake, and the rear brakes don't work. Do you guys see anything else wrong or missing I know the shock resivor is in the wrong spot and about the rear brake resivor.

You need some insulators/pipe hangers for the silencer. It looks like a fresh top end..make sure its jetted for the clamp on filter

The silencers bolted on at the bottom it doesn't move any. I will be getting wrap for it though so I don't melt the plastic. The guy that had it must have put a allen head bolt kit on it I'm going to have to buy a set of wrenches know I don't have any that big.

Its about 8* here right know I can't get it started and I know nothing about these carbs. It looks like it's been running recently but I don't know it may have been sitting a while it's got some gas in it I'll have to check and see it is any good heck the carb may be dirty I don't know. I don't have a heated garage so I'm reluctant to go out there. I always buy something in the middle of wenter to work on 2 years ago I bought a dirt bike and rebuilt the topend in the garage in about 10* weather with a tiny little propane heater I could barely feel my fingers. the things we do for love :D:crazy:.

I know about filter allready the airbox will be put on as soon as I get one. The shock resivor will have to be put back in the right place before it will fit though. Does anyone have any of the parts I need or know where I can get them?

Wow nice find/deal! Im not 100% sure but that looks alot like one that was listed on CL last fall near springfield IL. If I remember right the guy was asking like $1900 for it. I could be wrong though but it was a 2nd gen R with a dg pipe and a mudlight front tire.

That's a steal. At those temps you might need to re-jet the carb. Also could just be the gas/oil mix is old.

HONDA_ATC_FREAK
02-05-2011, 01:19 PM
I doubt if it's the same one but it might be it was sold at lowdermans auction in macomb,il thats over two hours away from springfield it's possible I guess.

02-05-2011, 01:20 PM
Probably not, who would be asking $1900 and then sell it at auction for $500. Just so you know I went up 2 sizes on my jets for winter and now it starts great.

HONDA_ATC_FREAK
02-05-2011, 01:25 PM
well I don't have any jets for it I'm going to try to take it apart today and clean it just so I know it's clean and I'll change the fuel out. we'll see how far I get I've never take on of these carbs apart before.

Pretty simple, if you have taken apart any motorcycle or ATV carbs they are all pretty similar. If you have a good aftermarket sled or motorcycle shop you should be able to bring in your jets while they are out, they can sell you a couple larger sizes. Jets only run a couple bucks each.

Really good deal. Shes a keeper. I would just pop the head off and see what size piston she is on and what shape its in just for kicks. Then again that cost me a pile for what I found on my 81R.

I just got done cleaning the carb it had some crap in the bottom of the bowl it must have been sitting a while. I forgot to pull the plug to see if it's any good. It's 30 out now I tryed kicking it over for a while and it still wouldn't fire so I'll check tomorrow about the plug but if that ain't it I'll have to call in the calvary. On a better note I now know it has carbon fiber reeds.

Are you getting a spark? Pull the spark plug put it in the boot, holding the boot, ground the end of the electrode to a cylinder head nut and crank the kickstarter with the other hand. You should see a spark arcing from the nut to the spark plug. Make sure you are holding on to the rubber part of the boot or it will shock you.

Thats what I said I was going to check I'm to exited to wait till morning I'll do it after I eat dinner I worked strait through it earlier. this is an addiction i'm telling you:twisted:

ok just pulled the spark plug it is a ngk R BPR4ES from what I've seen thats not the right plug its supposed to have a BR8ES. What does this mean as I know nothing about this engines history or the person who owned it. If it has a big bore kit on it does it use that spark plug? Maybe the guy just threw it in there for the heck of it I don't know.

not sure what you are looking for on the parking brake. its the same as a 83-85 200X. all of the brake components are the same as the 200X except the lines I think

HONDA_ATC_FREAK
02-05-2011, 11:11 PM
sweet thanks hey do you know if the grab bar is the same as a 200x

ebecme01
02-05-2011, 11:14 PM
Im not sure. I can go look though. they aren't the same. the 250R grab bar doesnt have the round collars at the mounting holes, its just flat

HONDA_ATC_FREAK
02-05-2011, 11:26 PM
@#$% a buddy has one of those I'll have to see about the brake stuff you say there the same as a 200x exept for the lines.

Just got a complete brake system off my buddys 200x. The parking brake setups not the same, and I think the rear is different as well it appears that the rear would have to be turned around backwards to work. But the front brakes appear to be the same.

ebecme01

Look like the caliper is the same. R parking cable pulls from the top and X pulls from the bottom. bleeder is in the back on one and front on the other. I never noticed the lever part being different...probably because whenever I adjust the parking brake its worthless after one ride so I never use it.

according to honda the part number is one number off of being the same it looks the same to me its just ment to be on the wrong side.

HONDA_ATC_FREAK
02-07-2011, 07:09 PM
Well I got the new plug a b8es The manual says thats for a usa model and the br8es is for canada models I don't know what difference it makes so I got the usa model they didn't have a br8es. I also got the rear brakes working kinda I was curious how you bleed the lines.
