Kinda up in the air of a model and maker.
Found a bunch of Honda's from 3 to 7 bills.
Found a Yamaha 225 DX but it seems high at 9 bills but has shaft and nice blue.

Anyone got some advice for a newbie on the models, makes and $'s?????

what kind of riding? sproty or just putting around? 250sx may be a good one as it has full suspensiona nd reverse.

Mostly back hills but some neighborhood and snow would be cool.

Does she want a manual clutch (foot shift, hand clutch) or an automatic clutch (foot shift, no hand clutch)? My vote for either of these would be 200x (manual) or 250sx (auto)

So the 225SX is a Honda right???
Sorry, don't know all the models!

No, 225cc engine are Yamaha. The SX they are talking about is an Honda ATC250SX made from 85' to 87'. 86' and 87' models have better sealed rear differential and don't have cold starts issues like the 85' but they are a little bit harder to find.

Do any of the Honda's have shaft????
or all chain?????

250cc Big reds and SX are shaft driven. Some older 200cc Big reds are also but I'm not too sure about these (depends of the model I think).

Reason to choose shaft over chain????
Bottom line??? Honda better or Yamaha good also????

Shaft is better for hauling stuff. IMO chains require more maintenance. With a differential, you just have to check your oil level and change it once in a while. Quite simple. A chain will stretch over time and wear out, so you will need to know how to replace sprockets and how to adjust the chain.

I'll let somelse chime in for the yamaha vs honda...(I've never owned any yamahas and I don't want to start arguing about that :P)

chain transfers power better but needs adjustment .. shaft is all sealed and has reverse ... Yamaha's can be good but there seems to be more honda's out there for parts

A 250SX is plenty of trike to get her in a bad situation.

All depends on her experience; maybe a 200S would be a good starter trike....

It's a hard tail so people tend to keep the speeds down when learning on one.

200x is chain. No reverse. Clutch to change gears. Good little bikes, real fun.

My wife has an 85 200x. It dosent have reverse, its chain drive, manual clutch. The only thing she dosent like about it is she has trouble with the kickstart sometimes.

Post us a picture of that blue 225dx if you can.

I had a 225dx when I was younger and now own a blue 225dr. They are tough as nails! Hondas are great bikes too! I promise you if you ride that 225dx you'll pay the $900 for it. (Granted it is in decent shape) I've ridden a few hondas, but there is nothing quite as fun as my DR. That is my humble opinion.

Goodluck to you!

that yamaha looks good but 900$ is a little high , they do handle differently .the good thing is you could probley put a elk on that huge rack. find a 500$ HONDA 185-200 YOU WILL BE WORLDS AHEAD and HAPPY ,:D

I own a honda 200 chain driven, a honda 200 es shaft driven and a yamaha 225dxn, and my personal favorite is the yami, but for power sliding the rear end a hardtail beats all, however since I have put over a hundred hours riding my yami I wouldn't pass it up for the world takes a lil getting used to. scares the hell out of my wife when she's on the back and I hammer throttle in first and it pulls right up into a wheelie. electric start is nice in the winter too, as I can loosen up the motor, then pull start it to get her running. choice is yours and I agree 900 is steep for it, but depends on where you are and what they r going for. First thing I would do is get rid of the rack, I don,t like the way they look with one on, and makes them a pain to load in the back of a truck.

dont rule out the 200x...1st generation-83-85's are fairly cheap to come by....like already mentioned it has a chain drive (which i personally prefer), if you keep it oiled and properly tensioned it will last along time before you have to replace it...if tuned properly they kick start on the 1st or 2nd kick.....slow enough to "learn on" but snappy enough for just about anyone to have a blast on.

well the Yamaha is going down, now 750$
Question?
Why would I want/like a reverse???
Thanks for all the info to a newbie, confusing making a good decision.

The Yami is a bird in the hand and other Honda's are the one's in the bush right now, but maybe I am in no real hurry.

That DR looks sweet. That is what I would like to get for my fiance, a little lighter than the 250SX, E-start, and extremely cool. $900 doesn't seems too bad if its in as good of shape as it looks.

Yamaha's are pretty dependable, and even if you can find a 110 or 160 KLT Kawasaki, that would be cool. At least if you purchase a Honda you'll have lots of parts to fix it, lots of parts are needed to keep them running. The 200x is a good entry level trike. It's fun with the clutch and my kids learned on them. But slow speeds on trails take alot of shifting. Didn't someone on here in that area have an auto-x for sale? Perfect trike there, with a price comparable to the DX (which is a killer trike).

This 225 is in primo shape, just the choke is stuck!
You guys think 700$ is good price??
Has title and keys, rack does have to go!
Still thinkin' the Honda 250SX would be a great addition but this is here now??

I'd grab it now you wont regret it new choke cable is 49$ from dealer and about a 30 minute fix, 14mm wrench and take off seat and fuel tank, vice grip lightly clamping plastic nut on top and unhook cable from frame, also after cleaning carba couple of times you will be able to remove and clean and adjust it in about 30 mins. Also yamaha still makes alot of parts for it vs honda which doesn't make a whole heck of alot for most of theirs.
