View Full Version : Why won't my shifter go back to the middle?

Well, The shifter lever is really loose. I can shift through all the gears, but when I go to down shift, I can't. I have to lift the lever first then down shift. I have to do that all the way down to first again. I made sure the lever was not loose on the shaft. What the hell is wrong with it?:(

Just had the same thing happen on my 350x...it got so bad I had to push down a little to up shift! Ended up a simple fix...just weak springs on the internal shift mechanism just under ther right cover...

WHO the F said shift forks??!!

Damn, it's most likely an easy shif linkage issue, many times a broken or loose bolt. No case splitting required.................

I checked the bolt first. I try to check the easy things when i remember them. I forget them sometimes.

i worked on a yamaha quad that did the exact same thing.. it was the torsion spring for the shift shaft..

Was it a big bear 350? My 90 big bear does that where you have to push down a bit then shift up and vice versa. My guess would be a spring.

That was an even dumber reply; Sorry, but it was a stupid thing to suggest (your making the guy think about splitting cases which isn't fun for anyone!), I'm sure you've seen dozens of bent shift forks, (maybe from some of the top AMA pro's).

I have even seen something as simple as removing the washer from the drain plug cause shifting issues, it hits the shift drum in some machines..... I forget which one I fixed that had that issue but I believe it was a Honda dirtbike....

That is really good to keep in mind. I had not thought of that. I am sure it is the spring because it is really loose and it shifts through the gears fine. Thanks everyone!

Stop me if I'm wrong, but the point of these forums is to help people out, not put poeple down. Lately I've seen alot "you're an idiot for suggesting that" replies. Noone here was born knowing how to fix these things. You learn how to do it one of 2 ways: someone told you, or you figured it out the hard way. Either way, I'm sure you've done and suggested some pretty stupid things in your life, so just ease off the insults!
