So I bought one of the aftermarket rear bearing carriers off ebay. I am very happy with the quality but am confused by the grease zerk. I was assuming that the zerk would be exposed through the stop nut opening but after thinking about that it made no sense. I guess I just grease it up well and reinstall.....

Nah, they are stupid as all hell..........
HOPEFULLY!! They removed the inner bearing seals on the axle bearings, then you can pump it up but too much will pop out the seals. Unfortunately you won't even see it get overfilled because the outer seals hide the bearing and it's seals. "Ask them a question" and see if the inner, outer or both bearing seals got removed? Bearings are cheaper without any shields or seals so I bet they are "open" bearings.
You can't drill a 1" hole anywhere because depending on how the chain is adjusted, it may not line up........
Use waterproof grease all over the carrier, you won't be able to use the orings on the carrier. When it becomes tough to seal, loosen the axle nut, slide the brake hub off, loosen/remove the chain enough or take the carrier out. Now it's out enough to clean it and the swinger hole, regrease the outside (and this new zerk now), grease it up and reassemble.

I bought one of those carriers off of ebay. It is made by Lone Star. I think that the quality is really good, no matter what DC says Ha,ha,ha...The grease fitting is not an issue at all, just put as much grease in it as you desire.. that's what I did, and I haven't had an issue with it at all in 3 years.. Just make sure you grease the axle thoroughly in the carrier area also, so you will be able to slide it out easily..The only problem I had was, I bought an 86 carrier for an 85 X.. I had to machine my rear sprocket, and get different sprocket bolts. The 86 carrier flange, where you adjust the chain, is thicker than the 85(just something to think about)..I filled mine up with grease long before i installed it..
