broken pull start

any body know how to fix a pull start? I'm sure its probably simple, i just don't know, and don't want to venture into something and make it worse, i pulled it and the cord came out, also still cant get it to idle (1983 185s)

There's only one way to learn, pull it apart and see whats inside. Get a manual and tear into it.

There's nothing special to watch for pull start. Get the manual, follow the steps and try to rememeber how things go and work. Just watch for the recoil spring as you dissamble it so it dont pop right in your face. If it pops out, you might struggle with it a little to get it back on but if your dont have sissy hands you should be alright.

If ever you encounteer problems feel free to post pics and lots of people on here will try to figure it out with you.

ok, thanks, im going to start on it in the morning, if i don't figure it out ill post pics, ive never taken one apart, i like to do things hands on, but i don't like to venture in not knowing whats going on

Yeah, pretty simple to pull them apart. Check the service manual to see how it all comes apart.

The hardest part is getting the spring wound up tight enough to fit in the recoil when putting it all back together. It took me a few times to figure out the best way to do it but now I can do it pretty easily

Your first time trying it will be the hardest but after you figure out how far to spin it after that you can fix any pull start with your eyes closed

Yep not bad at all. Get a manual and take the mystery out of it plus it tells you a few details you wouldnt know like what to grease and how to preload the spring and such.

Edit: You'll also know if your missing parts like mine was.

i took it apart, put the rope114674114675 in it, and put it together, but it when i pull it and it recoils, about 3 inches of rope says out

Yes it will keep doing on the trike.
You need to crank the recoil one more turn before putting the rope in.

I think he meant that changing the rope wasnt that bad except for putting back the recoil spring back in.

keep the spring in it. if it is still in it u should be able to turn the middle piece till tight then it should fit down in the cover {twist it the right way that or it will have no recoil

Tightening the rope to have good spring:

The easiest way is #1 to pull out about 7 to 12 Inches of rope until you line the notch/groove up with the rope hole, #2 while still holding the 7 to 12 inches of rope, use a screwdriver or something of that sort to grab the rope on the inside where the notch/groove is, so that you have a few inches in your other hand. You need enough to hold and have a good grip on it. step #3 is to put the rope(still holding) in the groove/notch and then start winding a few times. I think you go counter clockwise. Just turn it the hard way. Do this until you think it is tight. You may want to try 5 turns to start with something like that. You should have a super tight recoil spring when you are done. If you don't then try another couple 2 or 3 turns and check it again.

This is a really simple thing to do once you figure it out.

I've had good luck using 2 nails pounded into my work bench. I pull the spring tight around the 2 nails and then clamp it with vice grips to hold it tight while I pull one of the nails out. Put the spring in the recoil and release the vice grips. Carefully! I wear safety glasses while doing anything like this

Sounds to me your pull cord is too long? You only need about 3 1/2 feet or so. Enough to get like three revolutions when pulling. Try pulling the cord through the handle to shorten it up a little. Test it before you cut it. Make sure you leave enough to get 3 turns out of the starter.

ok, i thought that might be a problem, fixing to go to lil rock, so when i get back im going to jump on it and not quit till it grt it fixed, next comes pulling off the carb and try to get it right

Safety glasses are a must when you mess with these recoil springs. I always wear mine. Springs are crazy sometimes and I have had them slap me several times before I started using my spring tool.

You can get them really cheap. About 10-15 bucks for a decent pair. Also saw some at the dollar store.

ill probably get some in the next week, going to just rebuild the entire pull start, and was also looking into the goki electric start, does anybody know if they are any good? i know its probably too much to pay, but when its freezing outside coon hunting, you don't want the hassle of pull starting
