was wondering the process on how to title a trike in new york . i am getting ready to sand blast and powder coat a frame on a 200s . but i want to make sure that i can get a title for it somehow before i do it .

the 84 200s i bought was a wreck and i am currently trying to make it new again i only have a bill of sale for the trike and would like to have it titled so i can do some "legal" rides with it when its finished . i dont want to have my trike impounded because i cant provide a title

the forst thing you want to do is have your local police run the vin and make sure it was never stolen, its happened on here. the dmv doesnt always work stolen vins have been ran on them and didnt come up as stolen. call your dmv and ask them about the title after you run it and they should be able to walk you through the process.

In nys you are safe if you have had the machine for 7 yrs or greater(as far as data base info on thefts)...They will require a vin rubbing and a signature of the previous owner..they have all the forms you will need..i just cant remember the form #'s...goodluck..hit me with questions if you have any more...

ny dmv is full of a bunch of jackwagons!!!! worst state in the country for anything!!!! first, do as portland said and have the vin # ran. it checks out ok, then you have to apply for a new title for the bike. you more then likely will need a bill of sale to get one. depending on which dmv your going to and who your dealing with behind the window, they might have you fill out a yellow form stating bill of sale and both parties have to fill it out. the person who sold it, how much it was sold for, and to who. they will charge you tax on the sale amount! so the lower the amount it is purchased for the less tax. or if you can get the person you bought it off of to "gift it" to you, you wont have to pay tax. other times you can go walking in with a regular peice of paper that says...i, "so and so" sold/gifted one 1985 honda atc 200s, vin number blah blah blah, to "so and so" for said amount. both parties signatures on it, and that works. remember though, thats just for the title. after you get the title, you will have to go to your automobile insurance agent and have to insure the atc and get proof of insurance, then go back to the dmv with the proof of insurance and register the atc. good luck, like i said, ny dmv sucks azz!!!!

Wow, I thought NY sucked before I read this- Hey scooter, what do younger kids do out there? Being under 16 and trying to get insurance for an ATV would be an impossibility I would think? Oregon must be the most lenient for this- walk into whatever place sells offroad registrations (bike shops and sporting goods stores), give them whatever VIN and make/model, $10.50, and you are set for two years. No ID, no insurance, hell you can make up any VIN you want.
