So after the new year, I began tearing down the 86 I got for a complete nut&bolt restoration. I wish I could say that money was no object, but it is, so I'll be getting new Maiers all around. I'm spending a little more than I thought, but well worth it. Got the frame and swinger powdercoated, sent the hardware out for new zinc, and got some new rubber as well. Here's the progress so far.....the one pic of my daughter on it is the day I brought it home

Great looking trike! keep up the good work! When I added the 450 exhaust to my 350x, i used the 200x brake reservoir and mounted it to my air box.

Thanks, before I got it powdercoated, I did a little work on the frame. I took the factoy exhaust mount and put it on the lower tube back there for the new muffler there. I also had to fabricate a new tab for the brake reservoir, which I set back like an inch and a half from where it was, but I had to use the hose from a 200x...it was the only one I had long enough to fit.

Where do you get stuff re zinced? I assume youre talking about the nuts and bolts.

01-17-2011, 06:41 PM
I found a place in Orlando to do it...about an hour drive, but worth it...he only charged me 100.00 to do ALL the bolts and brackets...and I didn't even have to clean them first. I'll but a pic of them up when I get them. I just did a search online for zinc plating near me.

Don't let that 1st picture deceive you...she was a POS!! The frame was twisted cracked, welded, hacked...the plastics had atleast 2 coats of paint..the forks were bent some kind of bad, I think the only thing I'm keeping from it is the lower end, piston, muffler and seat...no joke.

Nice job! Can't wait to see it finished. Keep a tally of the cost, it will give me an idea what I'm in for if I do one of mine! I just got a great tank last night, looks new inside, no dings, it will only need paint and decals. I'm a bit scared of making one to nice to ride like the 86 Big Red I had. Unfortunately I am not experienced with these mechanically but guess I'll get some learning real soon!

These things are pretty simple to work on....right now my transmission is sitting in freezer bags, along with the rest of the engine guts. I downloaded the service manual, it does a pretty good job with illustrations. Just remember to take your time getting the gaskets off the cases, only use a razor!! I'm waiting on a new left side case to replace the one with chain damage. Should have the engine back together next week. As far as progress goes, just got the new fenders yesterday (maier of course), along with the handlebars, new axle bolts, some frame rubbers, and the all important decal kit. Hopefully the guy will call tomorrow with my hardwarde.

We just brought our newborn home from the hospital the other day, so progress has been at a standstill, but I did get a chance to put a couple goodies on today while everyone was sleeping today...still waiting on the hardware from the platers though, I guess that's what happens when you get a great deal, it takes forever.114625

Lookin good,
I am going to try and get a rolling frame this weekend.

Flossyb20
01-21-2011, 06:37 PM
I'd love to get mine rolling, but no word yet from the platers...they have everything - swingarm bolt, front axle, brake brackets, etc. Can't believe none of you guys have commented on the front fender decal...looks a little different huh??

NICE, I love the detail pics. The hardware is awsome.

Do you plan on riding this, or showing it off for a while? :)

Flossyb20
01-24-2011, 11:55 PM
I'll be riding it as much as I can...I just wanted to start with as new of a bike as I could. I'll ride the heck out of it, but I'll take just as good care of it. As a matter of fact, I still have the 85 200m my old man bought new sitting in my garage, still looks great (after new fenders and a few small odds and ends) After its all said and done...still way cheaper than a new 4 wheeler, plus I don't have to trade my man card for that extra wheel:D

WOW, you are venturing into showbike territory. I'm way behind you now, I'm having some stripped bolt problems, still waiting for my 36 tooth sprocket, and chain. And its so easy to move around without the motor in. I'll get alot done this weekend.

I do plan on riding it a lot, so I went ahead and reinforced the frame where they tend to break...I'm thinking it should be good to go - we'll see about the jumping though, I'm more of a speed guy, and less of an aerial rider. As far as the engine goes...yeah, it should ladt forever...I still have my 85 200m I (my folks) bought new in 85..still on the original bore, and doesn't smoke a bit (I did replace the valve stem seals once) and she's got aLOT of hours on her!!

I got the bolts fixed with a thread file. It was the caliper pad bolts, I monkey'd up the threads getting them out.

Could you do me a favor, and describe how the 86 clutch cable is routed? This bike is a blend of a 85-86. Maybe post a pick of where the cable passes near the header.

And If your are a speed guy, you might want to think about a 36 tooth rear sprocket, Big help on top end.

I got the motor in today. And alot of other stuff. I'm still in the game. :)

On the 86s, the clutch cable runs dow the left side of the bike - like so...
115340115341115342

The 85s run the cable down the right side, along the down tube, between the 2 header pipes, and behind the header assembly..like so...

I know this looks like an 86, but it has the clutch cable routed like the 85s

So I'm down to the details now...need to get the gas tank painted, the intermediate pipe made for the exhaust, and the new front mastercylinder sandblasted and painted. But I can cross this little thing off the list...thanks to sittinguy for sending his broken one so I had a good base plate for it.

OK guys, picked the tank up today from paint...pretty much the last thing I was waiting on. So, before you say anything, yes I know, I doesn't look like the one in the brochure, but this is what I believe the 87 350x would have looked like had they never stopped production-just like the 200x. The 85 and 86 had the same scheme, so there's no reason to believe the 87 would have been any different. Besides, it looks great, and is a very clean bike....enjoy.
