So ive been waiting till ive made a decent amount of progress on my project before i posted up anything and i think ive reach a good point.

At the moment im waiting for my big bore piston and stroker crank from Powroll, which is taking far to long in my book.

I bought this 85 350x for $1000 back in nov of 09 and quickly decided i wanted to go all out since ive always wanted my own 3 wheeler. The owner insisted he had a brand new 86 crate engine installed the year before and had not ridden it since.

The day i brought it home.....
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/IMAG0193.jpg

Started the process the following weekend....
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/PART951289093276641.jpg

Pulled the head off the engine....
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/PART951289093337788.jpg

Got the engine apart...
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/2010-11-27_12-30-16_638.jpg

Crank pressed out at my buddys shop since i personaly dont have a press...
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/2010-11-26_20-29-11_337.jpg

All new black plastics in my spare room waiting...
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/142-1.jpg

I got so excited i already went out and bought new rims and tires which i had to install...
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/2010-12-22_12-54-45_250.jpg
This is currently how my 3 wheeler sits, i do have a gusset kit on the way. once i recieve it ill finish the tare down, weld the gussets on and send it in for powder coating.
I already have all new gaskets and seals along with bearings waiting on the rebuild.

ANY feedback or advise is greatly appreciated. If anyone has differant ideas for me feel free to let me know and ill take them all into consideration....thanks guys

UPDATE 1-14-11

It was x-mas when i got home lol

Got my Powroll race cam, Powroll springs & retainers, alum gas cap and my gusset kit.....looks like ill be welding and griding this weekend!! im excited

UPDATE 1-16-11

I almost finished the gusset kit but i ran out of gas for my welder. but i think it all came out pretty darn good.

http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/114.jpg

UPDATE 1-18-11

Im very happy with my progress today. I finished welding the gusset kit up and started seeing how im going to mount my dual oil coolers and what to my suprise i found, the tank doesnt fit worth anything.

looks like im going to cut and reweld the mounts in better spots so the tank will fit right. also make sure my 250r forks wont interfer.

and yes my oil coolers will be even, i havnt relocated the coil mounts yet lol

Looks Great, Now you gotta polish the triple trees and the forks, And you are going to want a QPS front skid plate for it, also polish that. Oh yea and an aluminum rear skid plate,,, :) also polished.113981

i leanred something last year. Alloy skid plates suck!!!! my son went through 3 during the racing season and then we switched to a oscvarmayer fabes specual sheet metal one and it held up the whole time. the alloy ones cracked and tore all the time. so jsut an FYI, you may be better off getting a good stocker and haveing ti chromed if you want a show look vs. alloy for that reason, unles it;'s just gonna sit int he show room.

PRM makes some pretty nice swing arm skid plates, and now they make engine skid plates for 350Xs also.

I was actualy debating on getting the PRM engine skit plate and there dessert grab bar.

01-15-2011, 02:36 PM
why would people even buy an aluinum skid plate its point less aluminum is the easyst metal to brake and gets weaker every time it takes a impact even plastic ones last longer the skid plate is like the motors helmet if you use one get steel

sittinguy
01-15-2011, 02:48 PM
What the hell are you guys hitting to break a thick aluminum skid plate? You must be beating the crap out of your trikes.

bcredneck
01-15-2011, 03:40 PM
i havent broke the one on my trike but i got a deal on one that fit my xr and i snaped it on a log a week later my tiny xr75 isent that heavy. steel is just better for parts like that you can dent steel and it wont brake as easy ive even seen one of thouse aluminum ones get ripped off by a tailgate when a bike was being taken off the back of a truck

Its gonna look awsome with all black plastic. What about the headlight plasic, can you get that in black?

blkstangman88
01-15-2011, 04:24 PM
I have no clue where to get the headlight plastic in black. I was gunna paint it unless I can find one

spoon
01-15-2011, 04:32 PM
Kind of related. In reference to the black plastic and headlight plastic. I had an H&K SL-8 which is a US version of the G-36 assault rifle. The plastic stock was a bright grey so I dyed it to resemble the true G-36. I used a 5 gallon bucket insulated with towels, 5 bottles of the liquid RIT dye for clothes and filled the bucket with boiling water then added the stock, covered the bucket and made sure the towels were insulating the bucket on top too. I left it in there for 12 hours and then pulled it out. Nice and black after that, it works but I dont know about the red plastic. When I get home I will try this and post the results. Try it, your not out much if it doesnt work.

I was actualy debating on getting the PRM engine skit plate and there dessert grab bar.

I have the Baja grab bar on my 350X, it was on when I bought the trike. I didn't think I would like the extra width, now that I have had it for few years I love it. The extra width makes it so much easier to control when moving the trike by it.

I have a PRM 1/4" swing arm skid plate from a 250X/300EX quad (modified to fit) on my 350X also. It is nearly indestructable. I ride in PA's coal country, we have Rocks. The quad skid is all 1/4", the one PRM makes for the 350X is not all that thick. It is a quality piece, but I parted a 250X/350X quad and had the skid already. The thicker the better where I ride.

I ordered but have not yet recieved a PRM engine skid with out holes. .190" was the thickest they said they would make, which is much thicker than stock. I doubt I will be disapointed with it, I have used alot of their products in the past and have always been pleased.

In my opinion: 1-steel skids are too heavy for an atv when thick enough to hold-up, 2-aluminum swing arm skids 1/4" thick last pretty well for me and I have never been easy on equipment, 3-nothing lasts for ever, 4-steel rusts, and you can't keep paint on a skid plate

Very nice - looks like a fun build. Just a heads up, the PRM rear grab bar has a major flaw - the flag mount welds are not fully supported and crack off easily. Just as heads up on that product. Have fun with the build. The swingarm is on its way.

I'll take the headlight shroud if you are able to find one in black. Mine is pretty well shot.

PRM makes several different grab bars for each application, not all have that issue. The 'Baja' I have has it's flag mount in the corner and is welded on two sides. I believe the 'Desert' grab bar the OP mentioned should be similar to mine. Only the narrower ones have the flag mount issue, I believe.

Could you post more pics of the gusseting, mods to fit dual coolers and what you did to make the tank fit?

Gussets are from bill. Ill post better pix tomarow for you guyz. The tank and cap are from clarks. Im going to check to make sure theysent me the rite tank. As for the dual coolers im going grind the stock holders off and fab up new holders that are the same on both sides.

UPDATE 1-24-11

Got a couple little things done today.....

I got my 250r & 350x triple tree stems pressed out and dropped the 250r tree off at the machine shop to get reemed out and the 350x stem pressed in...
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/134.jpg

I went ahead and cut off the plate that hold the coil and vin since it was in my way to mount my 2nd oil cooler....
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/131.jpg

Im also relocating the mounting bracket on my 2nd cooler so i can mount it to the frame at two secure locations....
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/128.jpg

And got the two oil coolers mounted and there pretty darn even just how i like..

http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/137.jpg

My 250r forks should be in tomarow, and once my triple tree is back i can mount the forks then take then entire frame to my buddy with the tig welder and ill have him make some steering stops for me....

Ride the crap out of it and make sure you punk some quad guys for us all. The dual oil coolers are cool as hell.
I don't have stroked engine, but I do have the 13-1 compression, with ALL the other goodies, and yes it does overheat,, if I am not moving.
As long as I'm moving its fine.
Can't wait to see it done

Looks good, I'm glad you changed your idea for the steering stop. I've done 5 250r front end swaps and I just copy the 250r stop, but add a about 2 to 3 mm and grind till I feel good about the tank clearance. Also I'd bolt in the lower shock mount before any welding to avoid stress. Keep up the good work.

Well 3hrs of cutting and grinding lol but its on. yes i will be welding on a brace but i want to get the tires and weight on the setup before welding the brace on. i decided 5in would work better for me, im also going to get a 4in wider axle before thise build is done..

All you have to do is fly cut it down. If you can't do it, any machine shop can.......

Fantastic work Blkstangman!! I worked on my steering stops today, it was like a flat tracker before  Any thoughts on what your gonna do with those; I think they took me longer than most of the whole frame!!

I was actualy thinking about using the stock stops that are on the 250r lower triples and welding two small plates/ angle pieces on the under side of the frame. as long as i can keep the forks roughly 1/2in from my two coolers. got any pix of your setup DC? this is just one idea ive been pondering all week now

Dirtcrasher
02-18-2011, 08:25 PM
I'll get you some. I used .3125 thick steel, matched the angle of the stops and the angle of the frame. It was a ton of trial/error/ Bridgeport mill work.

To be honest, your correct. The stops are just a hair wider than the frame to get some good turning; But the only issue is that you have to match that angle on your lower triple....... I wanted them on there well because when I crash it I don't want them snapping off which is common with these changes.

I didn't enjoy today

What if your going with a stock swingarm but the 430 motor build? Will the 250R front swap still be better? Any concerns with the larger bolt being pressed in after reaming out the stock 250R triples with integrity during rides? Has this been a tried and true mod? Just curious as the gains sound good otherwise, (4MM larger, 2"s more travel).

your talking about minimal reeming. i had the shop remove .031 of an inch. which ment the hole was .004 smaller then the stem for a nice press fit. since hardly anything was removed i have no concerns about losing structeral integrity.

i dont know everything about the 250r swap but i believe you need the 85-86 forks. the 86 is better cuz it has a single spring over two in each tube. someone else will need to chime in and give specific details on the differances

Looks good! When I had my crank out to Powroll two years ago it only took two months, they must be busy. But as for reliability I have been beating on the 219x for two years now and she's running strong at 218 psi of compression!

That looks sweet! I had no idea the wait time was so long!! If you dont mind me asking, how much has this engine build up costed ya so far?

blkstangman88
06-08-2011, 09:16 PM
The wait was so long because the piston supplier for powroll couldnt get the pin holes and ring grooves in tolerance....so they tell me.

As for cost, with buying the trike itself i believe i have $2400 into it now. im estimating for powdercoating, exhaust, head work and new bearings/oem seals around $1500 more. which is fine by me to get exactly what i want lol

Kinda sucks i had to hault production but money is important and i had to leave to work, but it will be finished this summer and i will have it at st anthonys hehehe

userj8670
06-08-2011, 10:28 PM
So how much was the actual kit then? if i looked correctly and did the math right it was over $1000 for the kit - which i assume is bolt on?

blkstangman88
06-08-2011, 10:37 PM
big bore $345
crank $290
cam $195
Springs $130
rockers $130
powroll installed sleeve, bored n honed for free since i waited so long.

so ya i got almost $1100 in parts.

plus $200 for custom made +1mm valves. so looks like i got a little more into it then i first thot earlier but its still in the same ball park lol

userj8670
06-08-2011, 10:45 PM
lol adds up quick dont it :) Plus if you do the whole motor with bearings and seals that is probably another 1,000 or so. Looks like i better start saving:) But thanks for the info!!

blkstangman88
06-08-2011, 10:49 PM
ohh ya it does, my engine was still brand new when i tore it down for this build. all the bearings are in great shape tho i did replace many if not all the seals. anything i thot might leak i replaced for my own saticfaction.

userj8670

The motor alone has seen some great work and I'm sure will have a free flowing exhaust and some good size jets!

People claim reliability is lost once a motor is stroked and has allot of work done to it; We shall see. The 350X is a pretty damn reliable and tough power plant.

I'd imagine simple maintenance would keep the reliability factor pretty damn good.

If you like to jump, you'll find how extremely fast and how much torque this will have; I foresee a works rear shock in your near future! :beer

Im pretty excited about these colors, the "blk chrome" powder coat didnt come out as vibrant as i expected but thats ok, actualy chroming would have cost me twice as much.

Murfman, you asked how im planning on plumbing my dual coolers. if you can imagine im going from pump to the top of one cooler, connecting the two coolers at the bottom outlets then routing the top of the second cooler back to the engine. this way the oil will stay stored in the coolers so there is plenty of lubrication apon start up. and yes there will b a drain plug where the two coolers connect on the lower ports for oil changes. kinda confusing in writing but it make sence in my head lol

murfman
10-20-2011, 08:15 AM
I am interested in what you are going to use for the plumbing, are you going to cut the ends off the stock lines and use rubber hose? I think you would be better off running the coolers top to bottom so the oil flows throught the second cooler in ther same direction it did stock. I am not sure what the 350x coolers look like inside, but some coolers have directional fins inside the lines for maximum cooling of the fluid.

blkstangman88
10-20-2011, 08:55 AM
ive been looking into AN fitting and using metal braided lines between the sections. i have the 1/4in metal hard lines left and cut the remainder off the oil lines between. as for routing the coolers, your idea would work also. i havnt looked into the direction in which the coolers flow but you do bring up a good point.

one was the mid pipe which we hid behind the frame and plastics here.....
http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/blkstangman88/Mobile%20Uploads/ResizedImage_1323566475263.jpg

And the left header pipe we had to extend about 3/4 of an inch to clear the frame w/o making it to ugly. the other weld there to the left was a factory weld, not ours.....

Any updates on plumbing the Oil Coolers? I was playing around with them on mine yesterday, there is not much room up there with the motor and exhaust installed. I am running a 400EX Carb with a spacer to adapt a larger rubber boot, so it moves the carb back about 3/4" combined with the throttle cable cover being larger to clear the accelerator pump, it made it a TIGHT fit, I had to trim the plastic cover, but it fits like a glove now. Does that carb work with the stock throttle cable? If so I was thinking about ordering cables for the carb and clutch from Motion Pro with the steel braided sleeves. If you are interested I will see if it is cheaper if I order multiples of each.

blkstangman88
12-18-2011, 10:19 PM
The 350x throttle cable does not work. The 90 combined with the larger threads. I Alrdy ordered a new motion cable from rocky mt ATV. I do have a idea for the oil lines. My main concern is looks. I had to order some 90degree fittings so i can get the cross over line done between then two coolers. ill tell u guys what tho, theres absolutly no free space with two coolers lol and i did route the lines as so....pump to top of first cooler (like stock) then the bottom of the first cooler goes to the top of the second cooler. i tried to keep the same principle of how the oil flowed to avoid any weird or unthought of problem.

Once i get the cross over line this week ill try starting it, i wont be able to ride it yet since i dont have a chain but i can grab a fan and run it for the first 15min break in procedure.

Funny, I plumbed my oil lines yesterday as well. I am using earls black nylon braided hose. I know what you mean about no room. I ran my crossover hose in front of the frame downtube. It looked like it would be too close to the exhaust if I ran it between the frame and motor and it seemed like it would defeat the purpose of the second cooler. I just need my seat from Mrs Mosh and it will be finished. I plan on starting mine this week as well.

I was looking at your pictures of your carb. I just want to say that you are not suppose to take off the piece that is between the bowl and the main body. That area on the early carbs were known to leak air and they now use some type of sealer at that joint to prevent this. When they have an air leak the idle might hange or you get a nasty bog.

Just a heads up to anyone playing with newer FCR carbs.

As for your oil problem, did you open up and inspect your oil pump?

Like I say, you don't know whats in there till you look. I have seen ''new'' parts rust before, well worth a look IMO.

Yea, defiantly make sure the oil filter isn't in backwards...hope its something simple.

OK DC, Yes the ID of my new stainless steel lines are the same as the stock metal lines, i thought of this when i built them.

I tore the side open and theres new oil everywhere, crank, clutch, clutch bearing, shifting drum ect. i blew the lines out with air to the cam and they seemed ok.
i tore the oil pump open and did the three checks from the book, ring to body i got .005 (.010 tolarance) using mic and bore gauge, tip of pump shafts, the biggest was .004, (tolerance is .008) and then i used a straight edge over the pump components i measured .003 (tolerance is .004)

I called honda yesterday and gave them my readings and there tech said they seem a little on the big side (even tho there in tolerance) and its probly not pumping at 100% potental. sooooo i went ahead and they ordered me a new 300ex pump and theyll exchange it for free since this was a new one!!!! yes a new 300ex pump was in it. good thing i lubed the heck outa the cam lol

Yep, thats a good thing! Glad you caught it and didn't run it long........

If you crack the oil line fitting at the top end? Can you see oil when it's idling at the top of the tube?? (I'd start it and crack that tube fitting, you should see oil spewing out)

And I hear about all the crate motors, but everyone I have a trike in, gets plenty of oil; and not 1 clutch has slipped....

It would be embarrassing, but you've got a great trike there!

Well till he puts the new pump on and tests he can't be 100% sure. I'm curious about one of the oil coolers being clogged, or worse it can't pump through 2 coolers the way he has it plumbed. I myself would have put top to top and bottom to bottom and "t"ed the center of each to ensure it was the same on both sides. the way he has it, it requries tons of pressure to push oil through the coolers and the resistance could be causing part of his issue. but that's jut my personal feeling on it. I jsut got a 350x and when I start work on it, I plan on also going duals, but I will plum as i mentioned above.

OK OK OK everyone can start calling me a MORON!!! i was going over everything this morning, and what to my suprise, my cooler was plugged! im so mad at myself atm n pray nothing was damaged!

heres the scoop, when i was in the process of pulling my oil pump out i took carful note in examining the oil, the oil from the engine was clean, the filter still looks new, when i popped my coolers off, my original (which is the first cooler the oil hits) was perfectly clean, along with the oil i drained out of it, now then i drained the second cooler i purchased, dirty oil and metal chunks flowed out the inlet side. im pretty positive since the metal couldnt get thru the fins, they definitly didnt make it from the engine thru the first cooler. Conclusion, im a dumb trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro and completly spaced sonic cleaning my second cooler because i know i did the first.

my new pump is on back order so im going to pop the top and check the cam and rockers!!! if the cam journals are damaged there goes another easy $500 for new head and machine work to transfer my still new valves over. im have a drink lol

Don't beat yourself up.

I found my cam to need greater clearances as well as the decompression cable plays with that adjustment also.

I set mine to Megacycles specs and they make a bit of noise; I do plan on messing with them again.

Give Megacycle a call (I think thats who you got the cam from) and sometimes the guys wife is pretty helpful or gets her husband. Seems like a small shop based on the phone calls I have had with them but when I was nice, and he had the time, he gave me some answers.

Such as "run the motor at "XXXX" RPM's for 15 minutes to break in the cam" Then since we have a crate motor, there is another break-in procedure. I just used VR1 oil and took it easy for 5 minutes, then kept it revved a bit. How the helll can you satisfy both??!!

Like I said, I too have some noise though and will use the backwards screwdriver method to my ear to see if it's the intake or exhaust valves and play with a thousandth here or there until it sounds nice and quite.

blkstangman88
03-22-2012, 10:04 PM
Thats good to know. Ill be out in the garage tomarow tinkering with the valves more, try n tighten them up and quiet it down. Theres absolutly no lack of power for sure. Oils all over now its just that tick. Tho with the exhaust u cant hear it lol my neighbor came out and was in shock at how good it sounded ripping down the road........at half throttle. Lol

Dirtcrasher
03-23-2012, 04:01 PM
You'll find that every exhaust valve change affects the decompression cable, it it can make a loud tick also.

At idle just lift that decompression lever with your fingers and you'll here and feel that slap.

I won't claim to be an expert here, I figured that if I set them to the cams specs, it would be as quiet as OEM. But, I too am still struggling with getting it set just right and I think it should be silent, or does the cam drop off that fast, who knows. But, I only have about 5 hours on this crate motor so I'm sure things have to wear in a bit.

I like to ride, I get tired of dickin with things but I don't want them to wear parts out either........

You did even more work so you may have to mess with it a few times. Glad to hear all that money spent was well spent :beer

atc007
03-24-2012, 03:38 PM
He said .002. THAT will do that nicely! You want to hear them a little. Nice and quiet is not exactly what you're shooting for here! Dc's specs sound about right,,,way too loose for a stocker,,but close for a cam. Too tight does exactly what you're dealing with stang : ( TOO loose will break the top of the valve off at the keepers. Sorry for your troubles here man !

Dirtcrasher
03-24-2012, 03:50 PM
Thanks atc007, I missed that...

Looks like your exhaust valve pad wore the worst, I bet that decompression cable was set too tight also.

My decompression cable doesn't work like it did in stock form, I have to push the kicker a bit past TDC (My OEM trike is not this way) but it runs and makes great power so I leave it alone. It takes so damn long to get such expensive parts it gets frustrating.

Truth be told - I left all 4 rocker arm adjusting nuts loose when I 1st started my crate motor! Probably because I planned on doing it out of the trike but the parts took awhile to get here..... :( I guess we should all keep a notebook and document everything!! I caught it in 30 seconds because "it sounded wrong" but it could have gone much worse................

kasey200x
05-13-2012, 08:55 PM
Are you running race fuel or e85?(Don't remember reading about it) If not I can almost guarantee you to have some predetination issues and over heating problems. 13:1 is the highest you want to go in a water cooled engine before running higher octane fuel. I know you have a second oil cooler, but oil cooled is much less efficient in cooling the top end that a water cooled engine.
Also, sounds like you should check your gaping and ignition timing if it is possible. Maybe retard it just a little bit. Just throwing thing's out there to try, good luck.

blkstangman88
05-13-2012, 09:15 PM
110 octane only. Theres zero detonation issues, it just needs more fuel. Cant time these either.....as far as i know lol

Dirtcrasher
05-13-2012, 10:19 PM
I believe he's running some pretty good fuel and I don't think the 350X has adjustable timing as far as the ignition goes.

You can get a degree wheel and drill out your cam sprocket if you want to check the valve timing.

I don't believe the 350X has a "rev limiter" either.

I could care less about that crap, not enough time in a month even to check it; I want to ride it!

I'm sure he's happy with it sounding good, performing excellent and realizing all his hard work and determination worked out great! :beer

kasey200x
05-15-2012, 11:35 PM
a/f? its one or the other, are you sure its a fuel screw and not a air screw? If it is on the engine side of the carb, fuel screw. If its on the air filter side, air screw. This is usually the case.

And with the timing i was talking about the spark happening too late. Not getting good combustion at high rpm, causing the rev limiter feel. retarding the timing would make it fire a little sooner(same as closing the plug gap). I was not talking about cam timing. I can not give you any real text book advice on the stuff that is 350x specific. I had one, but this was a while before I got into the engine stuff. I am more than happy to help you with any info that is universal and you can choose which applies to your machine :)
Hope you get it all figured out.
Does you carb have a hot start? If so you can use this as a additional tool to aid in getting the pilot jet dialed in even better.
