i have seen a couple of people here have done it, but does it literally bolt right in? my tri z motor for my project needs rebuilt, but i stumbled accross a 1982 yz490 motor, with a fresh rebuild for $350 with carb. the only problem is, no pipe, an no electrical. is it safe to assume that the yz and tri-z use the same stator? minus the lighting coil? can i use tri-z electrical on my yz490 motor if i decide to buy it? also my best guess is that the tri-z exhaust will not suffice. i have also heard that these older yz490 motors had alot of detonation problems is this true? anyway im just wondering the extent of effort that this entails, i know with any motor swap there is work involved, but i just wanted to know if it is a somewhat reasonable project, or i should stick to rebuilding my tri-z motor.

pre 84 490 motors wont work.. the exhaust comes out the side of the cylinder.. yes they did detonate in hig rev's

well that sucks, that was a good deal on a 490 motor....
