alright like the title says, i just bought a yamaha 225 DR two days ago and now it will not start. ive noticed a few things. i guess on my first and only ride on it for about 30 mins, the line coming from the bottom of the carb bowl fell off and was just leaking gas straight fromv the bowl. I put a short piece of gas line and plugged it at the end to stop the leaking.
now when i go to start it, sometimes it farts a little bit but never starts. gas leaks straigt from the carb through the airbox and leaks out of the back of the airbox when the gas is on.
if i pull it over with the plug out it doest have spark but the plug is soaked and black. im thingking maybe the floats could be wrong causing it to flood??
any ideas? thanks very much

That`s what I was thinking, sounds like a stuck float. Take a small hammer or end of a screw driver and tap the float bowl briskly a couple times, and see if that helps.

that hose is the overflow when you plug it the gas that was poring out is going up the main jet and floding your motor
its probley a stuck float or rust holding the float needle open

Clean the whole carb and fuel system real good. Should be a bowl on the fuel valve, get any sediment out of that. Clean all the jets out with compressed air and/or aerosol carb cleaner, make sure they are really good and clean. Take it apart to make sure all the jets get clean, soaking the carb just doesn't work as good as pulling it apart. Once its all back together its a good idea to add a clean inline filter. Download the manual and set it all back to spec. I would put a new plug in their while you are at it and make sure the spark plug boot is good. Pretty much do all the maintenance that is required in a year of ownership in the manual because every trike I have picked up has been neglected.

yep im gonna have to go throught hte whole carb probably, seems like i do this with almost everything ive ever bought haha. the line and the bottom of the bowl isnt the overflow its right and the bottom. i think that is where you just put a short piece of fuel line and plug the end so that if there any dirt that gets in your carb it falls into the piece of fuel line and doesnt stay in the carb.
one more question too, the recoil is funky as well. you have to pull it with really quick short pulls a whole bunch of times to get it to grab and then you can pull it over. maybe one of those things that fly out and grab that "cage" sor tof thing attached to the flywheel is broken. or maybe that "cage" thing is bent and only grabbing partially? who knows i guess ill pull that of too haha

That is the drain hose, if it's leaking from there, check the drain screw.

Just pulled the carb out and completely went through it. Didnt seem like there was anything wrong so I cleaned it and put it back together and still the same thing. Gas drains right from the back of the carb down through and out the airbox. Not sure what to check now. Also there is 2 lines coming from the carb going to the tank, one comes From the petcock and I can't find where the other line goes on the tank. And I will check those yamaha manuals when I get home, thanks

The second one goes up under the plastic gastank on the frame and just ends...it's a breather for the carb....

i was thinking it was a breather too but when you turn the gas on it starts pouring out of the line but i didnt have it under the tank it was hanging there so maybe thats the problem. it didnt leak before i pulled it off.
Mess with the air screw too...That mite help.....

how many turns roughly should it be out? i dont think that will fix the problem of the gas overflowing everywhere but in the end i probably will have to set it right.which inlet on the carb is for fuel and which is the breather? right now the one on the side of the carb is for the fuel and the inner one facing up is the breather

alright so it is hooked up properly. another thing i noticed too is that the line for the gas going to the carb, that inlet actually pulled right out of the carb and it still sits in there somewhat tight and doesnt leak but.... hmmm, any other ideas if its not the floats?

Did you check the float level when you had the carb apart? any holes in the float? did it move freely? Also were the needle and seat making a good seal?

i didnt check the level but the float was good and everything looked nice and fairly clean to begin with.

good news, i puled the carb off and apart again. not sure how i missed it the first time but there was a iece of dirt or something stuck in the needle seat, so the needle wasnt seating itself properly and was just flooding. starts second pull now

yep. it runs ok, im thinking the carb has an air leak on the fuel inlet because the whole inlet is actually detached from the carb its just pushed in by hand to make it stay so it leaks a bit. im thinking it might be sucking a bit of air from there, other than that it runs alright. starts easily most of the time when its warm
