First time trike owner and longtime 3ww reader.Just did a fresh top end rebuild on my 85 200x... Everything is at spec, new carb, fresh gas, gas at the carb but completely dry plug no matter what.. also wont hit with starter fluid, trike is in-time by the manual and has nice blue spark. All advice will be appreciated

Did you check for spark? Pull the plug and hook it to a spark plug grounded to the chassis. Confirm spark.... I had a coil go bad on my atc 200.

Are you 180* out from correct time?

Sorry to drop the noobsauce on you but how can I check? Do I just rotate the cam sprocket 180 ?

Do you have a manual? If not you can down load one here from this site. You can have the rotor on 180 out from the advancer assembly. You have to match the rotor the advancer dot to dot. I had this happen to me when I was doing my top end rebuild. As I pulled the advancer off the cam, the rotor cam off. I didnt realize that I put it on wrong 180 out when I put it back together. But after a couple of pulls and I heard a slight misfire.... I realized I had a problem with my timing.
So you got spark, but it will not fire off with starter fluid?

Just go through and double check everything! I had an issue my other trike with a ebay cam, the cam pin was drilled off from the factory cam puts it. I checked my timing at the cam and crank and then looked at my rotor noticed it wasnt lining up like the photo in the book or my other Atc200 when at TDC. But go back and check everything.....

Well it was alive.... odd thing happened right after it fired, the flywheel bolt apparently broke and ruined my first listen of my trike.

The flywheel bolt broke? That is a pretty big bolt. Did something else make it break?

I kicked and kicked and kicked after adjusting the rotor 180... it fired and ran for a few then died so I took the caps out to check the timing and thats when I found the loose flywheel. I havent touched the bottom end except for oil so its beyond me how the hell that happened. I didnt even use that bolt to rotate the engine I had my brother on the kicker

the good thing is it's probebly an east fix. a lot of times the bolt loosens then snaps the head off. you can take a left hand drill but, drill it out then use an easy out. a lot of times there is no pressure and it comes out pretty easy.

yea I learned that one the hard way years ago hahaha. I got this trike 3 weeks ago for 275 bucks, engine was froze from sitting so long but other than that the thing is pretty clean and complete. Tank is a little iffy but the engine was mint when I got inside, a fresh hone, piston, rings and gasket kit.she sounds and runs perfect now. Will post pics when I get my camera back.

ok more issues popped up this evening while playing in the snow... she's a smokin rich it seems and now she is a total beast to start. When I do get her started it sounds really rough almost like a 2 stroke... Dirty carb came to mind but its a long shot since the carb is brand new and I tuned it by the manual.. All info appreciated

Could be a number of different things. Could you describe what happened when it started to run poorly? check if the air filter is clogged. pull the plug see what it looks like, try a new one. You said the tank wasn't so good could of sucked some crud into the carb. did you check the jetting of the new carb? Timing could be off? was the engine broke in properly whats compression?

My X tank is being repaired at the moment so Im not using it... Im actually using a plastic xr200 tank until my tank is finished. I drove it one time about 100 yards and then parked it to do some work around the house.... came back an hr later and thats when it started. The smoke hurts your eyes and doesnt seem to stop until you run it for a while and its a beast to start. The engine hasnt really been ran long other than one hour and a half trip, I did throttle it at low rps then higher rps to break in so it should be ok in that area. Thanks for the help

Could be a stuck float try tapping the carb with the handle of a screw driver or just take the carb apart.

Ok man I'll look at it tomorrow first thing, we already planned on soaking the carb.

I think your right about the crud in the carb or float sticking,I can leave it set for a few mins then try to kick it over and she will fire in 3-4 kicks.

If your gonna have the carb a part check all the jets, make sure theres not a piece of dirt in the needle, and check the float level. you have the manual right? it should have the specs and info for the carb that you'll need. I probly think of something else to check later. that always happens to me lol. good luck.

Well I broke into the carb today.... cleaned everything with a fine tooth brush and carb cleaner. I started it up and it ran really high rpms for a few secs then sputtered out and cant get restarted. Damn the bad luck

Nope I checked to make sure fuel was getting to the carb and it seemed fine. How it goes from running flawless to hardly running at all is beyond me. All help is appreciated guys thanks
