Do both gears usually need to be replaced to cure a slipping kicker?

You got it. The spur gear has been disc for at least 5 years. The pawl, or small hooked gear was availiable up to last winter. But i attempted to get one in spring and they were also disc. If you're crafty you can sometimes mix components between sets, tighten pre-load, and close the gap between the free wheeling gears so engagement happens faster. I've done this to all of my friends kick components due to worn slipping gears.. A slipping kicker is no joke, it can be downright dangerous if it happens unexpectedly.

Anyone know if the parts interchange with something else? I searched the tecate parts interchange thread, but didn't see anything listed.

KX250 of matching years but kicker spline area is different.

Are you sure your oil isn't cold or contaminated with coolant (water)?

My kickers all slipped when the water pump seal is bad. I've noticed a lot of seals go bad on my motors. Grooved pump shafts................

How much coolant does it take to cause it to slip? The radiator is pretty full (about 1/2 inch below the cap) and hasn't been filled since at least the begining of the summer. So I don't think it's leaking.

This thing will slip 10 times and then catch for the next five or so, then start slipping again - rather annoying.

if your site glass is white, theres coolant in your oil.

it could be just your gears are worn. try tightening the preload on the gear.

wonder if you could recut the edge of the teeth on the gear and ratchet. square them off so they'll grab again.

I've heard and seen all kinds of things from stretching the spring to replacing a worn washer and grinding the teeth.

I just know what I experienced on multiple motors.

Put ATF Type F in the trans and if it still slips then I would say it's mechanical and not the oil.

Hmm. I was looking at both my tecate and kx 250 kick starter asembly and they look the same. The kx is all stock and has never been worked on. Both sets of gears apper to be wore on both sides. I havent tried the kx one yet to see if it too slips. The problem I have is it works mocked up in the case with the clutch. But as soon as i put the case on the slipping occurs. My gears dont look to be in that bad of shape. Also there is a much larger sping installed in the kicker assembly. much stronger then the stock piss ass spring. If the gear is always spinning when motor is running could the shaft be somewhat wore out where the gears spins on? Need for speed you have any pics of the mods you have done to fix this problem?

Well, I put ATF-F in the trans, and it still slips. Guess I'll be pulling it apart.
There didn't look to be any coolant in it either.

Other people mention worn washers (wrong assembly stack height). Somethin about the plastic spacer and the spring.

Worst thing is I haven't seen many other answers for this (other than grinding the teeth flat as mentioned).

Now that I think about it my kicker slipped one time time this last ride. Mine now has KX250 setup.
