wow , i guess i am going to go ahead about 6 months early on this trike. i see others building and it makes me want to get started too, i know and yes i would jump off a bridge!!! so i had planned to start on the "DE" this summer because the black attack 70 was going to be first. well i have decieded to go ahead whth the DE . its going to be like a z28 of 250r's it is going to be more application specific . DE the 250r dune addition will have a few trinkets to make it a better duner rather than a general purpose trike, so keep that in mind . i had to dig into the 250r stash to see which one i was going to use. i pulled out a 85 because the swingarm i have is 85 so here we go. here is is in the yard before it makes its way to the garage for surgery.

http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n592/KASEYII/DSC01210.jpg

once in the garage i looked it over real close to see what all needed to be fixed just to be a ready to go rider. suprised me because the swinger bolt was free, the calipers were free. and the lights worked! pretty good.

http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n592/KASEYII/DSC01215.jpg

well after getting into it, i guess the frame is going to need to be painted after all. its pretty rough. i bought this trike 10 years ago and it was my mud trike in washington. so i guess its going to the frame!

http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n592/KASEYII/DSC01216.jpg

i am going to use a +6 swingarm i got from a member its a great old school piece too, i am going to use a gas only marvin shaw shock too. the guys at marvin shaw are great i got a rebuild and a revalve setup for the +6 swinger and my weight. since the end is different i have to build a different link end to match up with the pro-link setup. i am going to use an adjustable link so i have the ability to change ride height with the twist if the link.

http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n592/KASEYII/DSC01217.jpg

http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n592/KASEYII/DSC01219.jpg

i am out for the night i have dimensions for the new link end so i will knock that out tomorrow. i am also revising a the rear susnension on a 70 at the same time.. hope i don't get the parts mixed up!!!

i dont think thats orange. it looks red to me. anyway, sorry if this is a stupid question, i dont have a 250R. What is "DE"?? dune edition?? and that cylinder looks VERY different, obviously the motor is "built" like u said but thats not a stock cylinder right? or is it? so explain. what is that thing? power valved?? or what? looks AMAZING! takes some "apples" to tear apart that R how it was.....i would have loved to have that.

Hey Kasey, question for you. I have the same barrel and head on my 250r. See that small bolt just behind the exhaust flange (one the side of the cylinder) what is it for? Mine just has a bolt in there also. Is it a nothing thing or what? Also, the thing that looks like a cam chain tensioner on the top (obviously its not). Is that a powervalve? Forgive my "rookieness"

the cylinder is a power valved 350 from ESR the DE is my name for the trike . its going to be more dune specific in the build , +6 swingarm with more wheel travel , inverted forks with more travel, more power for better duning pleasure, and since i love to ride at night , a pair of HID lights and LED'S in the rear along with a smooth front tire and big paddles on a +4 rear axle, oh by the way my "R" stash i have quite a few to choose from, so its no big thing to tear one down.. besides its going to be better when i get done..

thanks kasey. is it like a bleed bolt for air in the system also? or should it be left alone unless draining the entire system. Also, do you have Arlans email from LRD by any chance?

big paddles.does this mean after years of YOU preaching tires dont matter, and putting ungodly POS Sand Shark paddles on your last build....LOL

ARE you gunna FINALLY throw away that Northwest mentality and get some balloony comp cuts?....LOL......or will we see more of the same?

MEMO to Richard
You always say paddles don't matter....
throwing horsepower at a machine means nothing with the wrong tire
you'll never have a respectable dune trike unless you feel free to comp cut

That was a nice R to begin with!

I have plenty of faith in your builds though. It already looks great. Your building a bike in the 2 months before Invasion and I am worried about getting my new swingarm put on in time.... which is already powdercoated....

I'm a driver not a mechanic. I have proven this point too, damn near killed my self by installing new stainless steel brake lines on my track bike.

Oh come on!You have a stash of 250rs like your stash of 70s?What else do you have a stash of?You are one lucky son of a gun.Arizona must have alot of surplus ATCs sitting around.Really can't wait so it finished, your work is top notch.

memo to the Michelin man,,,, my last trike was a ckean up, it had on it what it had when i got it,, just a clean up, remember that,, this trike will have skat-trak haulers on it,, not triple buffs but close enough for me. i found a brand new old school pair on aftermarket gold wheels,,, just don't know about the gold yet...

KASEY

now back to the build,, today i had to build a new link end for the dogbone i am using an adjustable one. i found this pretty kool one to bad i can't use it the way it was.. so i did a little measuring and built a split yoke type to match the sphereical rod end on the shock i am using, here is a before and after . all i have to do is make a couple of spacers and the rear suspension is rockin!!!

:D :D :D Today i got the frontend on, its she same as the one on the 2 wheeler, i built 2 of them just for this trike, i think my ride height is going to be a little high, but i think the extra travel is going to make it a nice ride in the rough stuff, i am going with no tread on the front. i think with the +6 swinger i have more than enough weight on the front for turning, OH, yeah i already have a trike with a smoothie and a +6 and it handles great....

That is one hell of a nice arm!

KASEY
01-20-2011, 07:42 PM
tim the foot pegs are ALUMINUM, I SCORED THEM OFF EBAY LAST WEEK, LISTED 3 MINUTES WHEN I SAW THEM,,, BUY IT NOW $80 they were made by RIS DESIGNS, i don't know if i would moto-x them,, but for us old retired duners i think they will hold up ok,,, but i am going to put them on the other 250r i just finished and build a set of wide pegs for this trike,,,

oscarmayer
01-20-2011, 11:20 PM
why could the shock not be directly mounted? ATVs haev them directly mounted. why not do that with your trike? i'd be a little weiry of that end link you made. what happens if it breaks going up a dune at 70MHP? shock bolted directly to swingarm in the same hold the end link you have is much safer, especially for what your doing.

KASEY
01-21-2011, 01:08 AM
there is such a thing as no-link suspension. are you not familuar with stock factory pro-link???? the pro-link on the 250r works great so why change it???? you think the steel link i built is weaker than the aluminum link on the other end???? i highly doubt that!!!! pro link is a variable ratio linkage type suspension, its on all performance atv's very common, so i have no issues with what i built!!

Bretmd94
01-21-2011, 11:57 AM
Looks great, The linkage will be fine. No-link suspension always seemed jittery to me. I hated the no-link on my KTM, the rear suspension never felt great. Plus you can fit a longer shock :Bounce

I am really jealous of that front end you have going on there. Were than any issues or custom fabricating needed to make the street bike triples fit? :wondering

TODAY WAS A BIG ONE!! i have felt the pain of seperation severly today.. i now know the pain a surroget mother has when giving up a prized posession ,,,,, yep the TRX gave birth to this and togay had to give it gack to rightful owner!!!! the powervalve adjuster clears everything ok, the radiator hoses are a little of a pain to get on , i had to reroute the one hose a little,, the only thing i have to do is move the cdi box , since i am going to be running a battery i think all the wiring will be in the airbox anyway... should only have to run the headlight and kill switch wires foward!!!

Dammit, can't say I have ever had the pleasure to ride paddle tires in sand. I just always imagined you would have a lot of sand spin and not a lot of traction. I suppose my science can be wrong. I guess I need to get my arse out there and find out for myself.

I used to think the same thing before I started riding dunes. You can barely even control a strong R with paddles and a stock length swinger.

Richard: I have a set of cut fenders that you're welcome to if you want them. They're cut pretty aggressively though. Not much fender material left.

the motor is a ESR 350cc powervalve ,, it has the trx7 porting which is a mx style porting .. it has great bottom end power,I HAVE A PAUL TURNER type 6 pipe on it now which is also a lowend pipe , just exactly what i wanted.. my wife and kids also ride these bikes i build so thats the reason , as far as the lights,, naturally the higher you mount them the better the view.. they are temparary to see if i like the location, if so i will build a permanant mounting that pins on for nght time riding only ,, and then i will run a number plate in the daytime with a couple of LED daytime running lights,,, the HID'S are going to be big if they have the right pattern,,, BIG!!
