When i purchased this 84r not to long ago . I noticed that the gear shift lever had been welded to the shift shaft and the last time i had it out riding the weld broke. Ok so now time to get it off and see what the main issue and why the weld , turns out the shift shaft and lever are both stripped ( very smooth ) on both spline areas. Anyhow so i picked up a new shift shaft and ordered a shift lever for it but now looking at it. It almost looks like the motor has to come off the bike in order to get the side cover off the bottom. Is this true ? Any help would be great.
Thanks

I dont know what side cover you are refering to - the clutch cover? There is a service manual for the 1st gen R, and supliments for the 83-4 in the back. Look at the manual, and it will tell you. Good luck!

I believe you do in order to get the clutch cover off far enough to clear the clutch and don't forget the seals while your at it.

I have the seals and yes the shift lever is on the clutch side on a 84r. Only reason i'm asking is because if the whole motor has to come off , i'm going to do it all up while the motor is off the bike.
Thanks

You can get the shaft off without taking the whole engine out....BUT, you will need to loosen all the mounts to do so. The shaft will actually come off with the side cover, and you'll have enough clearance to pull the whole thing out. The only down downfall to this is that it makes it harder to line up the shift gears when you install it, as you have to do so with the shaft in the side cover.

Ok , Thanks . What a weird design , i can see now why they made the clutch cover bolted on seperate to the side of the case.
