ok guys, I've been workign on trieks for a long time and motors for many years. I'm tired of dorking with my 200x. it sometimes wants to start other tims no. I'm tired of the kicker as well. I have a 200cc OHC lifan engine that is used and i'm not 100% sue ont he condition of the engine. but i'm thinking of using that as it will give me 5 gears + electric and REVERSE!!!!!!!!! ys it's a big deal on trail riding!!!!!

So what do you guys think? Should I just take my newly built 200x engine out and sell it? (rebuilt top end and good lcutch)

or what? I want to get on with the project as i'm tired of dorkin with it and My time is more dedicated to my son. I need to just start and ride. so the real question is swap to a lifan with electirc and kick start and reverse or no? the lifan came with 17-18hp and my 12:1 weisco probely puts me clsoe to that now.

I'd put the lifan in it. Electric start and reverse are 2 bonuses on the trail. As for your 200X engine, i'd probably sell it. I haven't seen too many of them around lately, so you might be able to do $360 shipped on it. (for ground it's going to cost about $62 to get it out, so you're still making almost $300 off of it)

I've been wondering about the reliability of Lifan engines, anybody willing to give a bit of a review?

Well. a buddy of mine has one (110cc) in one of those little chinese quads and it's a dog. sounds ok but no power at all. But that's just one. I have a 200x and couldn't think of replacing a Honda motor with one of those Chinese ones, I would get the honda rebuilt.

I guess can understand wanting reverse, even on a trike that is only 280 lbs..... But to loose the clutch.... I couldn't do it.

Just my 2 cents.

PS. On a side note. Mine was a bit like you say, start sometime, sometimes not, till I set the timing, set valves and did cam chain adjust. now it's 3kicks tops when cold and 1st kick when warm.

My 84 was not starting whenever it was cold, used to start on the first 3 kicks. I finally took the carb off, ready to rebuild it. Was messing with the choke and found out the choke lever is not directly connected, it just pushes against the lever hooked to the choke vane. It was gummed up and would not close, even tho the lever was moved. Sprayed with lots of WD-40 and worked it free. Put it back on but would not fire, found and old NGK plug, put in and it fired right up.
Don't buy plugs at the box stores.

Now that it was brought up, yeah I'd say you should check your valves, and re-tension the cam chain ontop of cleaning the carb and a fresh plug. Also do a plug chop to make sure your jetting is correct.

I know my 200X needs to have it done, it's tempermental when it's cold, sometimes it goes up first kick, sometimes it takes a dozen or more.

i've tried 4 different new carb (3 different sized mikunis and 1 chinese) and then 2 rebuilt stockers. it has the same issue. So I know it's probebly electrical at this point.
The Lifan engine I'm refering to is the same as the stock honda stuff. it has 18-19HP and is a solid overhead cam engine. cost will be shipped for about $550 or so. It includes new electronics, and sifter and kicker lever and carb so it'll run. Just again not sure.

Anyone have expirence dropping the 200cc ohc lifan motor into the 200x?

I`m in the middle of one and it`s been fired for a few minutes...I got the carb issue fixed and just have the exhaust to fab (using a supertrapp off an xr250) and he`s ridin it

what do you want to know?

you gotta use the X carb manifold cause the lifan manifold angle is different but direct swap...check inside where it mates to the head as the bore doesn`t mate exactly on opposite sides of the manifold`s bore...i used die to locate and file/sand the mismatched places...easily corrected

motor bolts RIGHT IN...and I mean exact fit...exhaust exits same location

I took off the airbox and mounted a 125m battery box in its place using conduit straps from hardware store and I`m using a pod filter with outer foam and sock in place of airbox...can`t see the battery with the plastic on

kicker is backward and FUNKY angle with the Lifan so I left it off cause Estart was what I wanted anyway...looks as though it could be modified to work with some fabrication and it would have to be kicked with the fenders off due to strokin backwards

I used the wiring harness from an 85 125M because it had the estart button and handlebar switches plus provisions for a regulator for the battery and whatnot....the Lifan came with all the cdi boxes and regulators and harnesses and coil, I merely figured out the combination of splicing some of the 125M harness plugs with the new Lifan Electronics and it worked fine....there is a plug of some sort for the Lifan that goes into the engine and I believe it`s set up for shift indicator lighting but I removed that. thought it was for neutral safety and probably is however there were six pins which is 4 too many for a neutral safety. The stator wires were seperate from from this other plug so it`s not for the stator.

as I said it`s almost a rider and I`ve had it running in the chassis a few times, figuring out the wiring from 125m to lifan was a bit of a challenge but it worked great and estart is nice...I took the topend apart a little and was impressed with the machining quality....cam gear was much more stout and the chain is that real wide hi-vol style

the oil cap is in a funky place as well...it ends up sitting in the indent of the frame plate for the swingarm bolt and while it clears the frame, removing and reinstalling is a little tricky...get a funnel with a bendy spout to fill oil, other than that no real problem

the final drive sprocket cover was touching the frame so I ground and filed ample clearance in that...took ten minutes

Reverse?....I didn`t know the Lifan was capable of that...is this what the funny six pin plug harness thingy is for?

the bad thing is the wiring schematic they send you is near awful...not labeled so I had to figure it out on my own

forgot to add!!

the Lifan front sprocket on mine is a 17 tooth and I need to find a smaller one...1st gen x does not fit the splines on the Lifan...I am a machinist so fixing this ain`t a big deal to me but it`s something to consider for sure. I think somewhere here somebody figured this issue out and could tell you what would fit

My kids have been beating the crap out of a china made quad fior years and have had very little trouble with it. Some of the companys are better than others.
