Hello there I have a 1985 200x with a kickstarting problem I bought it recently with this problem..I looked on the gooseneck by the vin and i dont see a X stamped...
Anyhow..the starter is still spring loaded and it catchs from time to time usually (always if its hot)...figures.....
I popped off the right side of the clutch cover and noticed its not like my bikes...(Yamaha blaster and banshee... 185s)
Ive rebuilt a few 4 strokes in my time and too many 2 strokes...
I was wandering do I have to tear down the motor to get to the stater gears?

thanks much for taking time to read my message..

-i do believe the cases have to be split to solve the problem. its a very common problem on the 83-85 models. if you leave it outside in the cold it will most likely never catch.

Yes you do, the shaft that the starter gear sits on can get sticky, grooved ,worn... when its cold the gear is tight to the shaft and doesn't want to slide, when it warms up it expands enough to free its self. What kind of oil do u use? section 10 shows starter gear and shaft http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/honda/atc200x_83-85_servicemanual.pdf

I like to use castrol GTX 10w40 in summer and 10x30 winter time.
