200x or 250sx

Which one would be better for trails, and going through mud and water?

They're both great trail machines. I would prefer the X because of the manual clutch and it's just a sportier machine. The X has a chain final drive which is a lot better under water than the SX's shaft drive. The SX's rear end likes to fill up with water when submerged.

Both are great bikes. I would suggest grabbing the bike that is in better shape.

Personally, i love my 250sx, but then again, i'm bias. I've never seen/driven a 200x. From what i have heard, the 200x will be faster then the 250sx but the 250sx should require less maintenance.

i have an X and nextdoor had an SX. The SX was IMO better in mud. The X is cooler though.

Why is that?

The 250sx has a drive shaft while the 200x has a chain. Drive shafts do not require as much maintenance as a chain. Chains must also be replaced / tightened every once and awhile, the 250sx drive shaft should never have to be replaced (unless something goes horribly wrong).

The SX requires MORE maintenance, they get water entry very easy being old and worn.

In new stock form, they can be less maintenance but now everything is worn out and the brake drum barely keeps any water out. Then it eats into the tube and along to the differential. That along with the boot leaking and any of the mating/bolted surfaces. The 86/87 SX seal much better than the 85......

Your choice can be compared by suspension, weight and application of use on the 2 machines.

One is a slower/torquey machine with barely adequate suspension and the other is lighter, faster and more of a racing type machine. Especially the 86/87 200X.

Learning to drive a manual is pretty easy. It will take some getting use to, but you will enjoy the learning experience. I learned to drive a manual on my 250r and i didnt find it that hard. I'm stilling learning though.

I really like my SX (I also have a 200m and 250R).They are quite sporty and a blast in the snow. I have never driven a 200x(i am going to look at one tomorrow) but i think it would be quite a bit sportier. Its too hard to learn how to use a clutch.

Well my 87 200x does great in the mud, i keep up with all the quads, I also do tons on trail riding. I also like to go to the track and jump what ever I find. so for me id rather have the 200x. Ive never owned a 250sx but from what I hear they have crappy suspensions and the 85 sx's have bad rear ends that like to leak, they are also alot heavier then the x. But the sx has racks for workeing so it all depends on what you do(ohh and its a auto clutch :D) So if you like slow nice rides and you work alot around your house the SX is the best choice. But if you like ripping up trails and floatin through mud(literaly mine just floats), and also like to MX some the X is for you! :D

I've owned both and they both do everything well. But when you hit a point that you want to do more the 200X with better suspension and a more sportier engine will keep you entertained longer. It all comes down to what you want to do with it, and if reverse is important to you.

My belief is that everyone should learn how to use a manual clutch. Even if they don't own any manual clutched atv's. Learning how to use a clutch is as easy as the teacher is capable of teaching.

The reason why a lot of the 250sx rear ends are trashed is because the owners thought they were maintenance free.

yea if your worried about the clutch, its easy ive taught a bunch of my freinds how to use them. took them about 10 minutes or so and they got the basic stoping and going. as far as other things, wheelies, doughnut clutch popping you gota find your feel :D, and :o I forgot that they had reverse!! get the sx! lol jk, reverse aint that big of a deal just push it back words with your feet like a dirtbike.

I'm owned and ridden both, if your not racing or trying to ried mach3, then the 250sx is your best bet. + with reverse it's awesome! I have a 200x right now, and I'm not totally happy with it as far as steering and driving in the trails. the tight turns, I find I have to lean in hard and tap the throttle swinging my hips to swing the back end to help turn. if not, I run into brush or a tree. so if your jsut riding, then get the 250sx.

well im sure the X would push them but it would look stupid IMO, and the SX is like a sport utility and the BR is utility, and the BR 250 looks alot better with mud tires on it.

"whichever is the best price" you should be lookeing at which ones the best for you not the cheapest... cause usualy the "cheapest" requires a hella lot of work and for what you dump into the "cheap one" you could have baught twice the bike.

stock style tires all around, actually it's a true factory set of nearly new OEM tires. so I was supprised they did not turn well. But remember, we have a lot of sand in the woods in texas, so maybe that's part of the issue.

honestly if your wanting a mudding trike, the 200s is your best bet. it's light, hard rear and you can drop nice tires on it. it's also light due to solid framed rear.

I've built and driven both and in my opinion i would take the 200x. faster and funner to me, SX's are pretty stinkin' heavy. And you can throw a 200x around like a bicycle, parts are dirt cheap for them, they're really reliable, way better suspension and just plain sportier.

true, i didnt notice where you're located at. Yea, like where I go muddin right behind it is a huge sand pit and I have trouble turning out there. But on the trails my tires get it just fine. Lol, I just got done ripping up the pipeline with all this rain and I went to turn left to avoid a hole of water... lets just say the tires dont turn well on wet grass either :lol:
