Was out riding today in the snow and I noticed that when shifting into first gear weather down shifting or going from neatral to 1st gear it took a few attempts on the shifter to get 1st gear. Anyone have this happen to them on a 1985 200X. Whats the fix. Thanks all.

They sometimes have problems with the shifting mechanisim. The two peices that turn the shift drum sometimes wear down, and can cause problems between 1st, N, and 2nd. Does it slip into neutral?

If you mean does it slip out of gear into neatral, it does not. I can find neatral with no problem like always, but if in neatral and shifting into 1st gear it does not shift into the gear sometimes. If I keep trying It will finally go into 1st.

Well that's near the oppisite symptoms of what i suggested. Have you checked the clutch? Possibly it is too loose?
Good luck.

He said shiftin from N to first. I'm guessing he's already slowed down, if not stopped.

Clutch is new last year and seems to be adjusted properly. It is only 1st gear that is being difficult. I know there has been disscusion about the star looking thing under the right side case that has something to do with the shifting. any input.

The issue with the start is a major problem on th xr version of this engine. But that's kind of the same thing with the kicker gear being a major issue on the x version. It is possible that it be transfered to the other model. The problem with the star is the one i described earlier. Hard to find neutral, slipping in neutral between shifting, hard going into first, i suggest pulling the side cover and looking at it. The problem can be fixed quick. There is the actual star(i believe they call it a cam) that is attatched to the drum with a 10mm bolt, and there is the mechanism used to turn that cam. If you look up a parts diagram you will see what i'm talking about. The problem that occurs is when the places of contact of the star and this shifting plate is that they become worn out. Causing lack of engaugement. the plate is number 10 on this chart. And also can be easily removed with just taking of a little circlip.

go to shift drum + gear fork or somethin like that.

If this is the problem, it's just a quick fix. The most time consuming part is removing the clutch cover. There's just one bolt and one clip holding these peices on.
What oil do you run?

Valvoline ATV oil from the Tractor Supply Store.
