View Full Version : Tecate has a Milky Eye. Where to start looking?

Well the Tecate got all done yesterday and after it started I noticed the Oil I could see through the eye was Grayish looking. I drained the oil and it didnt look good. I thought it might be from sitting but after an oil change it turned gray after about 15 seconds. This is what it looks like in the eye.
Im just wondering where the leak can come from? I already redid the impeller seal, but that was about 10 years ago. Its been sitting pretty much since it was redone. After the stator blew up last year the flywheel didnt want to come off and the crank shaft was banged on and an air gun was used pretty hard to get the flywheel off. The dealer wasnt sure if it wouldnt get broken because they had a real hard time getting it off also. So y question is can you get a coolant leak from the frank seals or just the head or impeller. And where should I start looking to figure this out. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.112275112276

sounds like water pump seal has gone, it might have perished a bit sitting for 10 years! or head gasket?!?

cant happen from the crank seals? The head did have little droplets of coolant along the top head gasket at the dome. Maybe it could be the gasket? But if so then there may be a problem with my jug. I have taken the dome off a couple of times and tried to repair it. But the coolant droplets always come back. It didnt do this last time it ran and that was before the crank was abused to get the flywheel off. I hope it cant be the seals, but I dont know.

It's the impeller seal for sure. That can't happen with a head gasket.

As Fabio said above, it has to be the waterpump impeller seal.
Crank seals keep the transmission oil out of the combustion chamber.
Cylinder base gasket keeps air from entering or escaping from the cylinder-to-engine cases seam.
Head gasket keeps air from entering or escaping from the cylinder-to-head seam. It also keeps the coolant from entering into the combustion chamber.
The only place for your coolant to come into contact with the tranny oil is through the impeller seal.

Yep, water pump impeller seal seal. It wont be the crank seals, because if they were bad - Left would mean an air leak lean condition, and right side would be sucking the oil out of the transmission, and into the combustion chamber, and it would smoke VERY BAD, and smell terrible. The crank seals dont have anything to do with the coolant in any way, as there is no coolant in the lower combustion chamber. With the head gasket weeping, you could take it off, get it dry and clean, and spray some copper coat on it - it comes in an aerosol can. Just a light coat on each side, and chances are it will not leak. What brand gasket did you use on your tecate? I had similar results when I bought the cometic set, but then I switched to veshrah, and havent had a problem since. Good luck!

yep definately the impeller seal is gone.

is the water pump shaft the impeller seal is riding on grooved? All mine are.
Water pump seals are a real issue in all these Tecates if you ask me.
Worst scenario is a crack in one of the water jackets or coolant passages. Say some used water and let it freeze in the motor.

The impeller shaft should not be grooved, if it is it needs replaced. That can be a problem though as I'm pretty sure they are discontinued.

Sounds like moisture in the oil.

Sounds like moisture in the oil. read the post, he noticed it was milky, changed the oil, and it was that way again in 15 seconds...

The shafts are discontinued.
I would think someone could weld some filler in the grooved shaft and turn the shaft back down again.
But that's just my theory, I am not a welder.

Hey, I've seen this on my friends new kawi 450 as well as on my tecate(the coolant level doesn't drop at all). I've also seen this on a kawasaki klt 250(it has no coolant running through it). I think that this may just be a case of small metal particles and clutch fibers getting stirred up by your engine. Your best bet would be to warm up your engine, and then give it an oil change again and if it does turn milky again then drain the oil and let it sit and see if you have tiny metal particles or water/coolant settle. I figure that it would be easier to spend $3 on a quart of oil then to start redoing the tecate and spend more.

Thanks for all the help. I will dig into the liquid cooling as soon as I can. When I started it it smoked real bad and for a few minutes. I just figured it was old gas and 2 stroke. I hope that was all. I allways think the worse with this ride. You all probably know why.
