I ran across a "new" '86 250R motor today and I am trying to figure out what it is worth? The story I was told was that in '86 the local Honda dealer had to destroy 10wheelers. They removed all the motors and gave them to a local high school mechanics class. This one was put away in the closet and never touched again. The seller claims the motor will manually turn over and that it has still has the VIN #s on it.. Is this at all believable and if so, what is it worth?? Thanks

I watched Andy's auction but this is just the motor.. Nothing else but it has reportedly never been run.

I'll try to get some pics.. I am interested in buying it but I just want an idea of its value. I figured this would be the place to find out.

If you look in the classifieds there was one that sold for $2,000 I believe.

1k to 2k depending on condition. If you can get it for anything less than a grand I would buy it. Offer him $200 and see what he says.

I know I can't get it for $200, but I know I can get it for under $1K..

eBay is definitely one of the better ways to get an idea of market value. Search for COMPLETED ITEMS, and compare final sale price.

A member from here (Donzi26zx) picked up a whole whack of NOS (http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?120205-Real-or-BS-NOS-ATC-parts-in-PA) a few months ago and has been selling it... here he tried to sell a NOS 250R motor for $1700 but no takers:

i would think that it would reasonably sell for around $1,500, but then again, i have no idea.

You'll be lucky to see 1200$ and the buyer would be an idiot not to purchase it with allot of parts being discontinued.....

Its VERY dirty and he stated it is currently sitting in a homemade frame of some nature.. The original carb is also with it.

maybe its all the dust, but my 83r motor seems to be in better shape then that? and god only knows how many owners my trike has seen.

It appears to be only dust on it... but then again..

I am planning on going to see it in person tomorrow morning.. is there a way to tell from the #s on the case if it is an '86? Anything else I should look at that makes a huge difference in price??

I sold my motor for 2000 but it was very nice. The motor in the photo is a 85atc motor not an 86. It has the 85 choke on the carb and it is black (I think its black LOL). To get top dollar new motors usually should look new. I would offer him 500, its at least worth that if it is indeed new. Just my 2 cents.

IF it is an '85 then it makes me wonder if it is indeed a never run motor. I assume the '86 motor isn't black on the cases?

I have confirmed that it is indeed an '85. I assume this will hurt the price quite a bit then.. I can get it for $600-700 range but would only resell it.

At 6-700$ not alot of "meat left on the bone" to turn a profit. Is that a Champion spark plug? Did Rs come with those?

Edit: Re-read your first post. His "story" dosn't make sense. They didnt have to destroy any 85s... and someone has deffintly been touching that motor. Make sure your not getting hosed.

They came with a Champion RN2C plug from the factory.

I don't buy that. Why would there be an American plug in a Japanese machine? I bought mine barely used and it had an NGK in it. Also the manual gives an NGK # for the plug spec.

could it be possible that the Honda dealer provided the plugs for the bikes?

Also could be possible that this 85 motor was out of an unsold 85 250r that was still sitting in a dealer showroom when the call went out to cut and disassemble them.

He has been offered $400 from someone else, sight unseen.. Might have to just let it go..

Now that the pics are up, thats the worst crate motor I've ever seen

Maybe it will clean up well, maybe it hasn't been run; But it sure doesn't look very nice.

Still might be worth a look.

Why do people offer things for sale without cleaning them? And a CRATE motor at that??!!

I would have had it out of that frame and on my bench, sparkling..........

cjkranz
12-10-2010, 06:40 PM
I don't think it would qualify as a crate motor, would it? I always thought a crate motor came in a "crate", not a take off/out.

That makes sense, I bought my 85 back in 86 second hand and it had a Champion plug in it but it could have been changed. My manual says NGK and Champion so your probably right.

you gotta be joking...thats been apart and it looks like it got stored in the leaky dirt ridden shed with no walls. Thats a $500 motor to me $600-700 on ebay. I'd try to get it if I was you for 450-500 tops. Good cases are hard to come by

does not look like a zero hour motor to me, even if it was clean!!
