my friend gave me his 85 200x to fix up for him. he gave me $50 and told me to do what i could with it. it runs but every once in a while you either have to clean the spark plug or sometimes replace it. so i figured maybe rebuilding the carburetor might help. would it? and if it would what kind of jet kit should i get and where should i get it from? also are there any performance jet kits out there? also would putting a smaller sprocket on the back give or take more power? and is there anything else i could do for it for the remaining 25 or $30 after doing the jet kit?

Buy him an UNI filter and leave the A/B lid off, then tell him to get off his wallet and buy an exhaust for it.
This is non 50$ hobby, I've dropped 600$ in the last week.......

Take his $50, and buy 50 spark plugs :P Just kidding of course, but it would be funny to see the look on his face.

lmao.... i almost fell out of my chair when i read that Xhumeka!!! but dirtcrasher is right.... as the years go on, the parts/value just rises....dont get in the game expecting to completely redo a trike if you dont have the cashflow... Ill almost bet most guys on here that have totally redone their trikes have way more money in their 3 wheelers than what they would ever get out of them.... but when its done and your sittin by a campfire with some old time friends tippin a few back and lookin at that machine you redid from the ground up, its PRICELESS :)

The cheapest price that I have seen on plugs is $2.00 each shipped from here:
10 NGK Spark Plugs Stock # 2923 Item# 690-2923_DR8ES-L
$15.00 (http://www.westmichiganautoparts.com/stock2923.html)
If you have a source for $1.00 each, I would like to hear about it.

i agree 50bux at a time isnt gonna cut it ... but a xr200 carb and intake would be a start to get it breathing a little better and get the carb dialed in and go from there prolly pick up a good setup for a few dollars more than the rebuild kit

Maybe take it apart n clean it up so it's ok until a nice one can be purchased for it. I'm doing up a 85 200x right now and it's not cheap. The members above are correct. To really get anything more out of it you are looking at this list:
New larger carb & intake (XR200 is a good choice), Cam (again the XR200), Piston with higher compression (like 10.5:1 Wiesco), New larger head pipe and exhaust (help work that new carb, Bassani, DG, SuperTrapp, I'd skip Cobra), Port and polish the top, New and better brakes (Info is in a post here at the site, very good stuff), maybe new sprockets with better gearing.....
As you can see, this get out of hand fast. Piston alone where I live is $70.00 and that doesn't include a Bore and Hone if needed. Sorry, but $50.00 bucks at a time isn't going to help. Tell him to save some $$$, or just clean up the carb for him and help tune it up. Be Cool.

For the 50 bucks, I would just trying to get it to run as is! A new plug, some carb cleaner, and pdf file of that bike. I would check the valve sdjustment, the timing, restore the carb to stock settings if the bike is still stock, and do a compression check. Make sure the tank and carb are clean and then go from there. I did this to my g/f's atc 200 first... The things I listed above. It did run better then when I got it, but it uncovered other issues. But I knew it was a solid starting point. I paid 350 for it and then put about another 250 in it! It needed a new piston ring set, top end gasket set, chain and spocket set, new air filter, new rear bearings, new front bearings, new seat cover, a new coil, port and polish the head, new brake shoes and springs on front and rear, fixed the flat tire by patch plug, new rim o'rings, new front brake cable, and some other small things. The point I am trying to make is, start with what you got and check it over using the manual. Then you will know what you will need to do next.... Either by replacing parts or by making a few adjustments.

Probably needs re-jetting if the plug is fouling up and not burning all the gas up... Or you need to run a hotter plug.

I'm thinking compression. Do you have the ability to do a compression test?

bigger back sprocket gives power, bigger front sprocket gives speed
one front sprocket tooth change is prob same as 3 or 4 on back
