111142111141111140111139111143I just picked up a mostly complete 1986 tecate 3 a few days ago. Its rough but it was free and its gonna mean alot to me when its done. It belonged to a friend of mine that passed away a couple years back. He bought it with intentions of rebuilding it but never got the chance. Most of the parts are there and the cranks already been done. It looks like the only things I'm missing are the flywheel and rear brake assembly. It still needs the top end done and I'm pretty sure the stator isn't any good either but its a solid start.

That's awesome.. What a way to celebrate your friend's life than rebuilding that. Keep us posted on your progress.. Welcome to the site..

Welcome to the site, That looks like a good start to a Great project. Sorry about your friend but glad to see your finishing the project in his honor. There are some real Tecate guru's on here that will be glad to help. Good Luck.

Thanks. I am planning on keeping this updated. I'm going to strip it down the rest of the way and clean up everything. The frame and swingarm were spray painted green at one time and it looks kinda shabby. I think I was to paint the frame purple, polish the swing arm, powdercoat the wheels black and do the hubs in the green. I'm not sure how it will look like that an I will probly change my mind on some things but I'm looking forward to getting it going again. I've already got a little help off here finding a different cylinder without chunks missing and I'm looking forward to learning alot off here.

113074113075I got a little progress done yesterday. I pulled most of the stuff off the frame and ordered some parts. I got new carrier bearing, new front wheel bearings and fork seals comming. I've never done fork seals before so it should be interesting. Hopefully I can go actually pick up my new motor saturday and start getting it put in. I picked up a 1988 kx 250 to steal the motor out of.

Sorry about the whole cylinder issue, but the kx250 transplant should circumvent all of those issues. Looks like a great start, and thanks for the parts.

No problem on the parts. I picked up the whole bike for less than it was gonna cost to fix either cylinder and the bike runs. I am going to finish stripping the frame and get it repainted and start from there. The mounts for the 88 kx motor look almost identical to what I need so I'm hoping it will slide right in and not require alot.

I got it completely stripped today and got the frame primed. I cant find purple paint that I think will look right for the frame and I like the ones on here that have blue frames so I think I'm going to copy that and go with blue. I don't want to spend the money on powder for it. I know in the end powdercoating would look way beter but I'm going to ride it not sit and look at it. I will get some more pictures in a few days after I get the frame painted up and start putting it back together.

I picked up the donor bike saturday and took it for one last spin around the yard before it gets transplanted into the trike frame. The bike itself is a real piece. The motor was rebuilt supposedly and then they decided the rest of the bike wasnt worth it. It looks like the engine cradles are identical on the two so I think its going to slide right in. The only difference I can see so far is the clutch cover is different. Its a two piece design so changing the clutch out will be easier. I also got the frame and brackets cleaned up and mostly painted. Who ever painted this thing green did a terrible job. It was more like thick overspray on most of the frame rather than an actual paint job. It looks a ton better already. I tried to take some pictures but the camera didn't want to cooperate so I will finish up painting it and start getting it back together and get some pictures.

Post some pics of the transplant !!! I don't think I've seen the 88 lump done before but always suspected it would work fine.

I 've bought a couple bikes just for transplants. So much easier than rebuilding and you get some of the money back parting out the leftovers.

Rode my latest transplant yesterday, but the KX gearing is tall and I wished I had more sprocket choices.

I was hoping I could sell off some of the extra parts off the bike but cosmeticly this bike is a real piece of work. The motor looks good and looking in the exhaust port on it it does look like it was done recently. It really doesnt look like this motor belongs with the rest of the bike. If they were separate you wouldnt have the slightest idea they came together. I did get an almost new FMF powercore silencer to use with the trike on the deal too. I think looking at parts diagrams and looking at the two motors the only difference is the clutch cover.

the thing about tecates is that a FEW parts are very expensive and the rest are almost worthless. the coolant bottle, skid plates, right shroud, nice tank, oem seat, and headlight are gold plated. the rest of the parts are pretty cheap.

i cant wait to see the clutch cover you are talkng about. that would be a rare piece for sure.

I hope to have the engine out tomarrow. I didnt get a chance to work on it today. I have the headlight assembly and its in pretty good shape but I don't think I'm gonna use it since the kx motor doesn't have a lighting coil.

I got a little farther on it. It looks like the bottom mount is going to be the only major thing with it and thats not even really that big of a deal. The other mounts will work with little modification. I just wish it would warm up a little so I didnt have to burn so much diesel to heat the garage. I am completely sold on getting a wood stove for next year.114004114005

It would be nice if you could compare some parts off the 88 KX250 to the Tecate to see if stuff might swap:

Front and rear brakes
Radiators
Pipe

Or add it to your thread or my thread here:
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?94809-Kxt250-Tecate-3-What-Parts-Fit-Swap-Interchange&

I've never had one to check out.

How bout a pic of the bike?

The pipe is just different enough to not work. The radiators look real similar. The brakes are going to work, I might have to modify the rear bracket but they should work.

Jeep1980, i have instaled in my 86 tecate a 1989 kx 250 engine and i instaled a tecate pipe in it with minor adaptation and power is incredible.I changed the angle and cut out 10 mm before cone. Thanks for parts.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at how to work the pipe. Can you email me a few more pictures of it from a couple different angles? My email in xray8506@yahoo.com I haven't made much progress on mine lately since its been so cold. I've been working on switching my garage to woodstove heat instead of the salamander heater its too loud and expensive to run for a long time.

Those last two aren't mine but they are exactly what mine should look like soon. Its just been too freakin cold in the garage lately. My "big" heater can't keep up when its below 20 and I've had to almost completely rearrange all my storage and shelving out there to get the stove close to the existing chimney. Plus I don't like painting anything with it that cold out there.

Hi Friend i hope that you can understand this job, that i made in original tecate pipe for adapt to kx 250 89 engine, i cut the tube three times ,you can watch in pics, the first near to cylinder was for to put in new angle, when piece was cut i turn it 180 grade in this case angle was perfect but the next problem was big 90 angle tube before cone, i cut it before cone ,cone is a little bigger that 90 angle tube and you can insert in it and weld it but before i cut 10 mm in 90 angle tube for to put all original supports, first i weld points for all for adapt in correct form and after i weld complete.iHope you understand me .For cylinder to frame the original supports are ok but only i maded a new hole(one of supports no original in pic),cases to frame in front i put straight supports and fit perfect too, under cases to frame i cut a little part of frame for to use the second hole in frame in right side, dont need many work for this adaptation

Yes, very much, I've been looking for green ones like that.

Do you know the part number or the particular colour. Is that the Fluro Green?
