I was given a 1987 TRX70 ... the fuel tank is rusty to the point that it gets into the carburetor ... and it's a biotch to remove the tank and clean it ... I have done it twice already and it ain't fun ... !!! It's a solid tank no soft spots ... what will clean it and then what can I seal it with ? ANY SUGGESTIONS ???

my father in law has this stuff he uses on tractor tanks he restores it works good he just did a backhoe tank that had rust and pinholes all throught it, even stopped all leaks. Im pretty sure he just puts it in the tank, lets it sit for a day or 2 swishing it around every now and then. Ill get the name of it next time im over there.

the local shop around here sells a 3 stage kit u can put in the tank for $40 or just run a fuel filter for a while and u can swap it in a sec and there like a dollar

Lots of methods to use. I just re-did my 200X tank. Here is what I did.
Took off the tank, removed the petcock, and the filter in the tank, and removed the gas cap.
Duck tape the petcock hole closed.
Filled it up with White Vinegar.
Added some salt. Then duck taped the gas cap hole. Then shook it around, and let it set over night.
That alone may take care of you, but probably not. So next on my tank I dropped a linked "Chain" in my tank. Dont use bolts. They are hard to get out. just drop a small chain in there. Next shake the tank with the chain inside. but close the top again with duck tape. Shake it well to scrape all of the rust stuck to the side. The I let it sit an hour or so, and shook it again. Then I dumped all the Vinegar out. It was almost like new again.
Next I added some hot water and baking soda to neutralize the acid from the Viniger and to rinse it out. After that I just kept rinsing it out over and over until all of the rust pieces were gone. As much as possible that is.
After I rinsed it out, I added a big bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank and shook that around and let that sit for a few minutes. Then I drained that out.
Next i got a blow drier, but a air compressor works way better. And I dried it out.
Next I used my $20 KREEM Fuel Tank Liner. Read the instructions on how to use that.
I only used about 1/4th of the bottle. Also I recommend doing it at above 70 degrees. So the stuff will move around and cote easier.
I've tried using stuff like "The Works" and muriatic acid. Its not worth it. Rust, Water, and muriatic acid are a really bad combo. The price is high, and the brain cells you will loose are not worth it. And it seems like you still need to use a chain or something to scrape some of the rust off the sides when using those chemicals. So I recomend Viniger, Salt, backing soda, alcohol and Kreem.

Hot water and muriatic acid. Under $10. The use it for pools and brick cleaning. Let it set 2 hours.. drain it and rinse it out. Then you can seal the tank or just keep full with fuel. I would recommend sealing the tank though.

^^^^ what trizinger said^^^^^excellent fix with little or no hard labor involved
I use swim pool muriatic acid mixed 50/50 with water and let sit for an hour or two as well. then I apply Redkote and never have anymore issues

Ditto, forget tank liners, get the Clarke tank. It's well worth the $100. I got one for my son's 86' TRX70 because the tank had rust in it.

I can't really budget the Clarke tank right now. With my fiance being ill and no income my family is pretty hard hit financially and right here before Christmas too ... Man it's been a sad time around here since about Labor Day ... So it looks like muratic acid and maybe some redkote .

You can get a POR-15 kit on eBay for about $50. Comes with the cleaner, acid and sealer all in one kit, and tells you just how to do it so you don't mess it up. I did it on my 200x and will be doing it on the 79 110 I just got.

I did the kreem kit a few times and was happy with it, If you have more than 1 tank to do there's usually enough extra to do them, so that can help split the cost.
I did 3 last time.
