I heard (from unreliable source) that the 86atc/86-89trx axle will fit in 85 carrier and swingarm if, you use the 86 sprocket hub? I tried searching but all i can find is info on putting 450r swingers in the 250rs
Im fixing up my friends 85 for him, and the rear axle/hardware is sloppy, and I want to swap to easier to find parts, possibly a 400ex extended axle, I have a dominator in my 400ex, and may try to find another, so that 450r/400ex hubs can be used.
has anyone done this?

Yes, 100% true. The axle shafts themselves are interchangeable, it is the sprocket hub offset to the carrier that is different from 85 to the 86-89. I did that exact thing, but be warned, the sprocket hubs are not meant to come off easy and boy they don't.

you CAN USE a 86 alxe in an 85 with the 86 sprocket hud intact.. i have 2 running that way right now... no problems..

Sweet, that opens up things for aftermarket, I have an rpm in my 400ex, i will try that and make sure it is the same, I know they are interchangeable with the 86-89 trx, which is the same as 86 atc

Kasey, did you have to swap carriers, or just axle? I thought the 85 carrier is thinner on the adjustment side
