I bought this girl a few month ago but didn't know what i was getting myself into. I now have 2 trikes (well 3 but one is taken apart for parts) and my dirtbike is for sale to buy another trike.
The SX is the funnest thing i have owned and have been offered way more then i payed for it, but its not going anywhere (unless i am riding it).

i showed you my 85. i have 2 buddies with 85, one with an 87 and i just picked up this 86 i might keep it or sell it to my brother who has been looking for one. we'll see, the tank is mint inside, the outside is wore out from knees rubbing on it, the things runs and drives MINT. $850 and it was 20 minutes away from me.

Here's a few pictures of mine that I got in a box from a fellow board member a few years ago. The only thing it needs in the picture is rear fenders. I put on my old oem ones to ride it. I'm still looking for a nice pair of oem ones. This is the one than ran in the ladies motocross at trikefest last year (driven by ShannonW) and at sandpuppies ice races. A nice solid machine! Would never sell it!

Lucky it was in pretty decent shape when I bought it a few months ago. I had most of it apart to replace some bearings and seals and fix a few other things. Other than that I just spent a lot of time cleaning it while it was still in pieces. It still isn't near as clean as Mr. Cleans though, and Thank you!

Do you mind me asking what you got it for? What do you use as a cleaner? Whatever SX I end up getting I plan on tearing it down and getting it in as good of condition as I can. Is there a way to bring back the shine of plastics, wax or some plast-x maybe?

I paid too much for it. I use a lot of simple green and a toothbrush or gas if it won't hurt the part. I haven't done anything to shine up the plastics but a lot of other people seem to have pretty good luck.

This thread should help with restoring the plastics

Wow, Nice! I may be selling my 86 Big Red to buy a 86-87 250sx. I have a 85 that runs great but has 86 plastics that don't really fit right. I am thinking about a front end swap from a 200x or 350x if I find one locally. Great photos!

heres a couple pics of my 1 and 1/3 250sx. the first picture is of the 85 which is co-owned by my dad, brother and I. Its had a hard life mostly from the previous and partially my brother. It is currently out of comision due to a huge tear in the front tire. The second pic is my 86 which is in fairly good shape other than i've patched the gas tank and it needs fork seals. It also has a big red rear end for when I go muddin with the 25" mudlites. Oh and the exhaust is rusted a bit on the 86. its nothin compared to the 85 exhaust though.

i have 2 85's. got the first for 350.00 needed some serious rear end love, a cable or 2 and thats it. got maybe 400.00 into it. the other i picked up back in the fall for 650.00 super tight and original, just has alot of light surface rust. was stored out in a shed for yrs. I have noticed that my rack is alot rarer than the other racks on the sx. i have only seen the one like mine where the back bar wraps around the side a few times. i think it is narrower, and looks better. I am also on the hunt for a straight light gaurd. Some beautiful sx's here guys. ^%#$ well photo bucket is being a prick right now, and i am not re typing. i will post the pics later

Count me in as a new sx member 1985.

Ok as a member I feel I can ask for experience. I would like to install big red (250es) tires and wheels (size 25x11x9) as opposes to the stock 22X11X8 tires. This should give more traction and clearance. Some say it can't be done.

I am willing to try spacers to get clearance ???

just need helpful advice on: what wheeels to buy??

what tires will fit??

How about using the wheel bolt plates that spine on the big red axle (off the axle of a 84 200es to get the 4-150) so I can use some 9inch diameter 4-150 pattern wheels. Is the spline the same??????

Surely someone out their has done this?????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????

Many thanks to sharing their experience.

not sure if that will combo will work 200sxrider but i say even though you may gain traction you can also gain traction by getting a differrent tire design that is more aggreseive or with new tires without changing tire size look at the possible gains vs. losses you would need more torque as the bigger you go the harder it has to work the engine to work turn em and yes by goin bigger on size you get clearance and the more tipsy you will get also if you go to big you feel like you have no power because of lack of torque,to big and they might tear your dust boots and possibly even the seals on your forks. now on the plus side if you have the space those bigger tires might improve your top speed they would give you more ground clearance and dependant on the tires you use might get you better traction just remember the more of a size change you make the more you will notice a difference in power either way and with the sizes you listed your talkin a inch smaller rim and a 3 inch bigger tire witch means your talking a 1"and a 1/2 inch bigger than stock size not alot but it might be enough to rub thru them seals and to the hubs and lug pattern i dont know that info but i hope this helps you out some if not and you dont find it here maybe in the regular trikesylvania if you start a new thread some one else might have tried and have a answer for you there wish i had more info for ya

HELLO 98rangerll ,
YOU AND I MUST HAVE MENTAL TELAPATHY. tHAT IS WHAT i WAS CONCERNED WITH. I ordered a set of 22x11x8 with free shipping yesterday. my concern also is the availability of these tires is decreasing. So we will all be in the same boat together. If you don't believe me just see what is in stock and you will order some also or be out of luck.

I plan on keeping the weight off mine when not being ridden and will keep them aired up checking often.

Thanks for the aformation.

Well For you guys looking to put bigger tires on your SX's I have run stock 250 big red tires on the back of mine and really did not notice that much of a low end loss it did feel a little tipser but I think that is mainly from the balloon stile tire I think a tire with a flatter tread would eliminate that. I have also found a way to put a 10x5 inch rim on the front with out changing any thing so that will also give you a bigger tire selection just my 2 cents I currently have a 23x8x10 on the front of my SX with the stock front hub.

tacate karl whats the rim and whats the mod to do it we need info!:lock:

Tecate Karl
02-27-2011, 05:54 PM
well swifty thats the best part there is no mod required. What I did is I bought the front rim off of a 1993 honda 200d from rocky mountain atv (if you need part number let me know). It bolts right on the only thing is with the offset you need to run the valve stem on the drum side but with it being a 10in rim it is still easy to get too so this is the cheaper way to go to the narrow front tire verses the 200x conversion.

How do these compare to the 200xs,I like shaft drive but I know it takes some hp off reaching the wheels vs a chain.

Hey guys...I'm new to the site...but not 3 wheelers...been around them all my life....I had sold off what I had when I was a younger man (I had a 350X man was I a fool....lol)....but I had other resposibilities at the time....I just got an 85 250SX....in rough shape...I rebuilt the rear end (has a 250es Big Red rear in it now), rebuilt the carb and now I'm hunting down all the missing pieces (the airbox to chassis tube and clamps are the last of the "missing" parts I need to find)...I does need new rear fenders....not worried about them being OEM...it's going to be a rider...any of you guys ever buy aftermarket plastic and how did you like it? I'm looking for opinions on fit and finish and all that good stuff...

Hi Guys,
Just found this post. Better late than never. Here are a couple pics of my 1986 250SX. I got it about a year ago in Payson Arizona from the second owner. It was pretty much original when I got it but I had to replace a few things. New handle bars and grips (old bars were bent), headlight guard, new tires, six pac rack, gun rack, hitch and air filter. I went all through and tuned everything. It runs really nice and does not smoke a bit. Don't get a chance to ride it much but I sure do like having it around.

Nice score there Thorpe. Looks like you got a bit of project there, but awesome deal for the price. Some funky looking rear tires, and that right rear rim looks pretty mangled too (makes me wonder how the hell that happened):wondering .

I miss my '86 SX, sold it a few months ago because I thought I needed the money, guy got a super deal for only $425.

I bought it as a non-runner for $200, rebuilt the carb, bought an airbox, air filter, new fuel petcock, battery, replaced the front tire, cleaned the fuel tank, adjusted valves, changed the fluids, and had a great running and riding trike (still needed plastics though). The motor was tight, didn't leak or burn a drop of oil, and ran great.

I have a 200X now, and I dig the lighter weight and better suspension, but think the 250SX had more power (although I'm sure the 200X suffers a bit of compression loss from a leaky head gasket even if it does otherwise seem to run pretty well).

I do miss the electric start, keyed ignition, steering lock, low maint. waterproof shaft drive, and it's best feature of all-reverse. Great all-purpose trike, still kicking myself for selling it.

My BR was as ugly as this SX is when I started on it... I will post up some new pics in a few weeks, as it progresses... I gotta get one of those white headlights for my SX though! I was wondering if someone set a heavy trailer tounge on the wheel or something (wheels were off when I picked it up) Rear axle doesnt seem to have any runout... The Dick Cepek rear tires stand a good chance of never making it back onto this one...

Hi Guys, I'm new to the site, but have had ATC's for 25 years. Original owner of an '83 BR. I'm glad to see there is a place for SX owners to share their pride, too as I currently have (3) 1985's, one in immaculate condition, needs nothing, and two that are very nice. As I work to improve and restore them, it is important to me to keep them as close to original as possible. That being said, I have been trying to track down original P/V 301's. I see restores and the like where people are replacing them, but where are they finding them? Honda direct has updated part numbers but is unable to show what the replacement tire actually looks like. I don't want generic knobbies and I doubt the 301's are still in warehouses. There is one new one on ebay for $175, but that's a bit steep. Perhaps someone has a set of take-offs or excellent condition ones they are willing to part with?! Thanks for help. Glad to be here.

Planned changes include a 350x front end, some wheel spacers out back with my 350x rear wheels and some 22" Mud Sharks. After that I'd like to extend the swingarm, add a rear rack, and change it up with a White tank, blue seat and 350x Honda wings on the tank.

This is my SX..love this machine. I really feel it doesn't get full credit..seems to sit in the shadow of it's big red brother.

Set mine up with the similar 'Bear Claws' that "mrtwidster" did..love it! Goes thru anything now..damn those knobbys they came with didn't do this machine any favours!!

Is there any advantage of a 350x front end over a 200x front? Or is it like comparing blondes to brunettes?

You can leave the stock front end on and get a 11" rim to fit, then spacer it to get the offset right..it worked for me.

My new favorite 3 wheeler... just got fork boots and a custom seat cover in the mail... need handlebars, grips, and I need to figure out how to get the Redkote off the outside of the tank. These pics are from the day I got it back in October... I have sanded and painted the rack and grab bar, and straightened the handlebars since then.
