I was just wondering what the average value is for a 84 tecate? as I have an opportunity to purchase one.

I am curious as to what the value of one would be as well. Pricing differs by area of the world. Stuff here on the west coast in southern california goes for less than stuff does on the easter side of the USA.

You've got to get more specific. It could be worth $50 or $3000.

Anywhere from $700-$1000 for a decent rider depending on condition, and parts. For myself I would pay more for a nice 85 than a nice 84. I have never seen a close to mint 85, but have seen a few close to mint 84's. Tecatekid's 85 MINT retro racebike went for $3500 and was a steal at that price. I break it down according to the going prices for the parts on the bike. The more performance parts (extended swingers, pipes, silencers, bigger carbs) the more $ it's worth to me. I myself would pay more for a bike with old school race parts in good condition than a mint stock bike. A mint stock Tecate really wouldn't be worth a whole lot to me as I would replace most of it anyways.

well, first off condition of the trike is everything. does it run? how are the plastics? frame? suspension? etc. something that doesnt run and is beat to death, obviously wouldnt be worth as much as something thats in good working, good looking order.

Considering the op is from Canada, that pretty much blows my whole theory out of the water. Add $500-$1000 to my $700-$1000 and go from there. It seems an enterprising individual would pick up cheap bikes in the us and sell them in Canada for a fairly large profit.

Yes, the tecate runs. The only problem with it is that the kicker broke and was welded. I can get this trike for $850.00. What do you think?

Not bad depending on the condition of the engine. The forks are backwards in the triples. The forks need to be loosened, dropped out of the triples, and flipped 180 degrees. Doesn't look too bad. The motors been apart at one time (paint on jug removed), swingarm has been painted, or is an 85 swingarm. The rear shock either has a painted spring, or is off of a different bike. With the forks like that high speeds would be scary, but would turn on a penny.

Where did the kicker break? At the knuckle? If they welded the kicker to the splines of the engine, that would suck. Replacing the kickstarter isn't a big deal. 84-87 Tecate all used the same kickstarter. I have a kx250 kickstarter on my 84.

Dam your skilled, you could tell all those details just from that one picture. Here is some more details about the trike.

brand new top end, rear wheel bearings, oil seals, stator w/80w lighting coil, and flywheel. Top end has about 2 hours on it. As for where the kicker broke, I'm not sure as of yet.

With the recent motor work and fresh stator and flywheel I would say it's worth it. If you would like to join, we have an 84-85 Tecate Group under the Groups section of the site. Lots of info in there. Hopefully you pick it up.. Welcome to the club. I don't know how much experience you have with fast three wheelers, but be safe, and wear a helmet. :D

It sounds like a Ricky Stator flywheel. Alot of Tecate owners that have recently replaced the stators are finding out that The coils themselves were attached without using loctite on the screws which could be very, very bad if the screws back out. Something to be aware of.

You've been a great help. I don't really have too much experience with these crazy fast three wheelers, but I did have a 85 tecate when I was 16. The only problems I had when I first got it was the rad leaked near one of the mounts, and the shifter slipped which caused it almost impossible to shift.

When I finally got the courage to actually open the throttle, I had my first accident. I noticed some cars behind me so I slowed down and pulled to the side, I then decided to turn around and go back home. When I went to turn around, I must have given it too much gas, as the next thing I remembered was being in a 6ft ditch with half my body through the neighbor fence. Lucky I was okay and the neighbor pulled me out and I hopped back on my three wheeler went back home and guess what, as soon as I got inside the drive way the three wheeler quit as it had no more gas left.

I'm always leery about trike pics that are "right after a good wash". When i bought my tecate in april the guy had "just washed it because it was a little dirty." Turns out it was leaking every fluid except the brake fluid... But that's ok, leaks are easily fixed with a few oil seals, gaskets, and Permatex if needed :p I would try to talk him down a little bit because it looks pretty sweet :] But then again I'm quite partial to any Tecate :D

Do you guys know if the 84 tecates are the same as the 85's? I know the 85's have a disk break in the front, but is there anything else different?

For Ontario I'd say move on that one, Mine were in worse shape for the same $$. Looks like the plastics are decent, is the cylinder sleeved or re-plated??

nope aside from the different front brakes they are basically the same. some minor changes, but nothing drastic. shift rod inside motor is 1mm longer on the 85 then the 84, different clutch plates, rear shock has better adjustment settings, the dogbone i think is longer or shorter, rear caliper is different, but like i said, minor changes.

Also mojo.lojo, get any receipts on the work and parts he has replaced just to guage where you are sitting with the previous owner. It would be worth it with all the work and repairs up north there, but proof would be more convincing for you. I don't like the 'as far as I know' or 'it should be o.k.' stuff, makes me nervous hearing that, lol. And this team green group is a great bunch of guys, pretty close knit, so you'll have tons of help. I built my Tecate and keep it running with these guys knowledge, heck, I'm an idiot and have a pretty sweet ride because of these guys.
