has any one lowerd tri-z fork internally I'm rebuilding my forks and want to lower them i have herd you can do it with pvc pipe also what weight oil and how much in each leg thanks!!

Pvc pipe - I have done it, but in no way does it lower the forks. Pvc pipe is used to stiffen up the springs, much like a progressive spring would, to better resist bottoming out on larger jumps. Would it be effective to slide the forks up the tripple clamp, so you have say 4 inches or more sticking out the top? Just a thought. Good luck, and will be watching this build.

trike moto

no you can lower fork with pvc if you put it under the rod that bolt in the bottom i have done it on my street bike before and just did it to my z fork last night.
got my fuel tank mounted today it is a old mini bike tank i had laying around it is 1.5 gallon it fit nice under the top air box cover

took the tri-z all apart to day to get ready for paint decided to remove all unnecessary brackets on frame that will not be using. still trying to find out fork oil specs (oil weight and amount)if any one can help?? can you still get radiator shrouds oem or after market?? thanks!!

I use 15wt Bel-Ray in my Tecate! Not sure on the amount for a Tri-Z.....

Yes you can lower the z fork internally. The cheap way remove the top spring.

The right way, take the top spring and put it on the underside of the rod. you must disassamble the whole fork for that.

what year 490 motor? where did you find a out of frame drag pipe for a 490? hope its not for a tri z motor,,, the exhaust port is WAY larger. I took the top spring out of my shocks ,, and it worked just fine! slide the forks down the tripple also. and I used 10w belray when I was draggin. DC plastic has new shrouds!,,,

85 triz 10w/ 151mm/ or 334cc's
86 triz 10w/180mm/ or 418cc's

87 490 motor the out of frame pipe came with the motor. the 490 was in a blaster frame at one time he had the pipe made for it but never finished the quad . It has a name stamped on it i will look at the pipe tomorrow and see what the name is. i lowerd my forks 2" inch internally by putting a 2" spacer under the rod in the bottom it works fine also stiffens them up some i am trying not to slide the fork down the triple to much i just don't like the look of the fork sticking up that much but will have to find out what works best with my set up. Raffa i will have a lot of questions for you along the way just hope you are willing to help out just reading some of your 490z posts have helped. Is your 490 motor dependable or a hand grenade like some yz490 owners are telling me?

Im assuming your going to run 300ft? What times are you expecting?

trike moto
11-08-2010, 11:13 PM
the track we race at is old school no timing system just a beam at the finish line that lites up a win lite they us a old stop lite as a christmas tree the track is in three rivers michigan it is the "old iron motorcycle club" they have been running it this way for 20 plus years from what i have been told . i was told the track is 400 foot they have 8-10 race's a year with a points system and money classes

Bryan Raffa

you will need to mount that motor,, and you will see where the kickstart hits the frame.. and make shure you get the head recut to cure the detonation.. and you will have to make a sparkplug wrench...

trike moto
11-09-2010, 09:47 PM
plan on getting the head fixed before i ever fire this thing up still got a long way to go. Raffa did you just heat and bend the kicker to clear the frame? thank info on dc plastic!!

Bryan Raffa
11-09-2010, 10:47 PM
no you have to grind the frame next to the swingarm cap.

trike moto
11-20-2010, 11:39 PM
picked up 490 motor today got it mocked up in frame (i see where to grind to clear the kicker thanks raffa!!) test fit out of frame pipe to see if i have room to kick this thing it is close but will work fine now it is time to paint frame so this beast can come alive!!

Bryan Raffa
11-21-2010, 09:02 PM
have you tryed changeing the spark plug yet?:D So who made the pipe?

trike moto
11-21-2010, 10:17 PM
i have a snap on plug socket that fits it will post pic of it later and part#. The stamp on the pipe is AAEN i now that they make snowmobile pipes but not this any thing like this. The guy i got it from said it was made 8-9 years a go but he never finished the quad it has some surface rust on it but will clean up fine

trike moto

here is the socket part # s9704rhs it works great. took the head of the 490 today to get it cut and see that it was cut already it has a 2mm over piston in it that makes it a 499cc sweet!!

Bryan Raffa
11-22-2010, 11:30 PM
I have a brand new piston kit for that bore..$130 and it could be yours.. weld a handle on that socket....oh let me guess you did a search of you 490...LOL

trike moto
11-23-2010, 09:57 AM
it has a new piston in it sorry raffa i don't understand what you are saying (let me guess you did a search of you 490) what are you doing for a air cleaner the carb is close to the frame

We went there a few times a couple years ago. Swineheart and K Shively are very near the place. Sort of a run down old place with whooped out lanes. But there are some fast machines there. We once had 10-11 3wheelers on the same day. I sort of stopped going due to the tower guy screwing up the classes, and arguing due to his heavy appetite for whisky. I hope they ditched that looser........

Oh man that thing is gonna fly with that 490 motor! video please!

trike moto
11-23-2010, 10:08 PM
modified some 1" 1/8 bar mounts today so i can run pro taper contour bars worked out good

trike moto
11-23-2010, 10:12 PM
the track is owned by the same guy but we have not had any problems with him. the whoops just give it more of a challenge any one can get down a smooth track!

Bryan Raffa
11-24-2010, 12:33 AM
dynoport welded a flat piece of steel to a 3/4 craftsman socket,, just short enough that you could get a full rotation on the plug,, without takeing off the shroud..

I stuffed a 48mm lectron in there...lol what do you mean close.. I will soon run a 41.5 pwk , removed the boost bottle, hand made my own carbon fiber reeds..switched the intake..

trike moto
11-24-2010, 07:42 AM
Do you want to share what intake you are using

Bryan Raffa
11-24-2010, 08:39 AM
I used the stock one up untill this re build....yz 250 comes out strait..

trike moto
11-24-2010, 08:44 AM
the strait one is is going to be even closer to the yes - no? what about a air cleaner??

Bryan Raffa
11-24-2010, 09:04 AM
Im also going to use a smaller carb,, I used a angled 13" K&N also,, wich you should have no problem,,, seeing how your not running the oem tank.. only one corner of the carb was close.. within 3/16"..Im hopeing this time it will be a even 1/4" across ..then I'll throw this reed spacer on...

trike moto
11-24-2010, 10:50 AM
what year 250 did the intake come off of and will the stock carb fit in that intake

Bryan Raffa
11-24-2010, 08:10 PM
not t shure .. 6 bolt intake.. not a 4.. it has a similar stuffer molded in it, like a honda,, I may modify it,, maybe with heat... think that was a mic 44mm roundslide,, wasn't it?

trike moto
11-24-2010, 10:07 PM
i think the stock carb is a 40 mm??

trike moto
11-28-2010, 11:13 PM
hey raffa got a good starting point on gearing this thing i am runing ams zippers 22"tall they are something like pro wege 2's i have 14-42 now but don't think that will work good thanks

trike moto
12-04-2010, 12:20 AM
finished the motor tonight will put back in frame tomorrow. then just need to get pipe mounts done and we can fire this beast up. dam it is geting way to cold out!!

Bryan Raffa
12-04-2010, 10:51 AM
Use blue lock tight on everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! especially the kick starter nut and motor mounts

I run a 16/34 I could have a 33 made for it,, but the chain will rub on the sprocket bolts..thats maxed out for gearing...:naughty:

trike moto
12-07-2010, 06:24 PM
got the motor back in frame today pic not so good it was smokey in the shop some one had a sled running

Bryan Raffa
12-07-2010, 08:10 PM
I like the pleated seat! and that front sprocket looks bigger than a 14

trike moto
12-08-2010, 09:58 PM
the front sprocket is a 14 tooth. made some steel motor mounts today the stock 490 mounts that i have are cracked and new ones are discontinued so i made steel ones should not crack but will move the weak spot some where else? the guys i work with made me this sticker when i was gone very funny!!!!

Bryan Raffa
12-08-2010, 10:37 PM
did you make spacers for the front and bottom motor bolts? when I had my pipe made ..dynoport put the groove in the inlet to use the OEM exhaust O ring.. that intake from the 250 is smaller but thats fine because Im using a PWK39 bored to a 41.5mm. got remember I stuffed a 48 lectron in the stock 490 one...LOL

trike moto
12-08-2010, 10:53 PM
spacers are tomorrows project the pipe i have has the o ring grove in it i need to get the motor mouts all done then put pipe on so i can make a pipe mount off the foot peg

trike moto
12-14-2010, 09:55 PM
got the pipe mounted today just have to paint it also got motor mount spacers made

trike moto
12-21-2010, 10:43 PM
fired up the 490 today sound good went for a quick test ride no traction in the snow will have to wait till spring to find out how hard it pulls that's ok still have a lot of work to do to it will post updated picks later

trike moto
12-25-2010, 10:05 PM

Lol

For dirt your still gonna want a better paddle for traction. Your '60's will suck with those things you got.

trike moto
01-12-2011, 10:49 PM
Ok that is why 90% of the racers use this type of tire for dirt drags. paddle tires just dig strait down and not go any where the pro wege is the top pick for tires with the 4-snows second I have ams zippers on my 490 for now will have pro wege soon

Bryan Raffa
01-12-2011, 11:29 PM
dang I forgot.. busy shoveling snow... ran a 4.8 with pro wedge 2's with ice studs in them,,,

Is the dirt your racing on packed ? ...aint no bike running pro wedges at PS drags dude...we'd burn clutches and pistons in seconds. The dirt is graded of course, and in some locations a touch of sand is also added

Got some stuff back from my buddy at his machine shop. lighted fly wheel took off 130 grams he said he can cut two more windows in it like i marked on it in the 2nd pic if i want to go lighter what do you think raffa go more or run what i got. also got front hub back removed brake disc mounts just needs some paint will have to weight it and my stock one to see how much diffrence it is. he is still working on the fork leg milling off the brake mounts

Bryan Raffa

02-16-2011, 09:58 PM
I have been gone for a couple weeks computer went down i got my forks milled and put on. tore the motor down sent top end to (forward motion engines) to get some work done they have done a lot of 490 stuff just waiting on it to come back ordered 1.50mm over piston will make it a 504cc "sweet" also shaved 4 pounds off of trike with front end mods and some frame changes will post pics later
