Not exactly trike related, but my street cr500 has a cracked piston that i found before a nuclear meltdown thankfully. Cyl is mint and in spec and has never been apart before.
It just so happened there was a nos std honda piston on ebay for fifty bucks so i scoffed it.
My question is do i have to use honda rings? Or can i use wiseco rings, ive never tried before since i always just buy complete kits.

Dennis Kirk's website says "Wiseco rings are only compatible with Wiseco pistons".

To the best of my knowledge, I've always been taught OEM pistons need OEM rings, same with aftermarket. I'm pretty sure there are differences.

Thanks guys, figured id post it here since its basically the same for our smoker trikes. Oem it is then! Hell it was the original from 94'. Not sure how many hrs it had when i got it, but ive put 4 gals of benoil thru it and that comes out to almost 4000 miles, thing actually gets around 30mpg and as some know, i dont putter around slo-mo. Thats honda for ya

Yep, I think you have to keep them all the same.........

Glad you caught the piston break!! :beer

Ya me too! Who knows, coulda been like that when i bought it. Ive got several other 5hundo pistons on the wall that also have fractures. This one is on the intake skirt tho whereas the others are all on the exh side.
I think its just the nature of the beast that they develop fractures, crank is still nice-n-tight

The wiseco rings typically are a few thousandths thinner for performance reasons but 90% of people wont be able to do tell the difference.

I bet if you mic that piston you'll find it's out of spec. Cracks on the skirts are almost always due to piston slap...i.e. loose bore or worn piston.

Only a cpl thou outta round, more wear on the intake and exh side.
Width wise(transfer to transfer) is within spec, although at the factory recommended max. Dont think that much eould do it do ya?

His 500 is a nice looking motor/bike. I bet it's lugged around...... I can't see it having that much use on it; Maybe I'm wrong.......

Yup. Those are the thrust sides. With it being street driven....it probably sees slightly higher sustained RPM's than on the track...which would add to the cracked skirt issue. Sounds to me...without mic'ing the bore and piston myself...that you are in need of a complete top end job.
