Hey guys,
Just the other day, when trying to start my 85' 250sx, the electric start decided not to work. It was working fine last week. I just bought a new battery, so I know thats not the problem. I went to start it and it sounded like the battery was dying, but it finally fired up. A couple hours later, all I got was click from the selnoid. So I have a fully charged battery, I am getting power through the selnoid and to the starter. I am thinking that my starter died on me, but I did not hear any grinding what so ever. Will a starter about to die, get very sluggish? Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

90% is the brushes in the starter, just take it apart and I bet you they are toasted, look at ebay they have good price.

For what a guy will spend on brushes and new brush plate (my plate was as trashed as the brushes...) You can buy a new starter on egay. I think I spent about 65 bucks for mine, and its worked flawless....

If I tapped my starter it would work once or twice so I had a choice,

29 bucks for brushs and plate and 3 pairs of glasses to get it all to go in with .030" clearance to weasel it all in there,
or 39 for a starter I found on ebay but just called the company directly since their number was listed and the were overstocked Cheap! at 39$

How unethical!

so I just got the brush kit locally and did it the same day.

Ps

I only did that because the rest of the starter didn;t look too abused.
If it needed an end bushing, I would've gone with new.

I just pulled the starter off tonight.... and indeed it was the brushes... so I will be looking for a rebuild kit or a new one.... whichever is cheaper! Thanks again guys

Just a quick question, The starter that came off the 250 was a Mitsuba SM-8 12v starter. Is this the original starter off this atc or has it been replaced before?

I think mine was Mitsuba. Seems to be pretty darn specific for the 250 as in I don't think it is listed for any other machines.

Watch out for mounting bolt pattern and long or short gear shaft.

Pretty obvious.

Now I've also heard that starter gears can be different but it seems like that topic relates to the gears inSIDE the engine case.

If you use the search key on here you'll get more info than you can imagine and prob waaay faster than single post method.

Had the same problem couples month ago. It was the brushes for sure but only 1 out of the 2 wasnt getting contact, the other was is great shape. So, I just had to buy 1 brush for 15-20 bucks if I remember right.

Glad yours is fixed. Anyone else needs to check grounds, clean connections and make sure that battery is at least 13V charged. If you bypass the solenoid (BIG wire from battery positive to big starter wire on top) and it turns over, your problem is elsewhere.........

May even be the solenoid, key switch, neutral switch etc. The wiring diagram helps!

Checked my starter today and it seems to be okay, could it most likely be the solenoid?

anyone ever deal with these guys? which one would be better?
