OK so that time of year is quickly approaching....snow season! I mounted my plow and winch today. I noticed sometimes my winch just quits. If I tap the motor with a rubber mallet it starts back up again. My battery is new so it can't be that. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the issue might be?

Probably the age and quality of winch...maybe some of the internal connections.
You might want to take it apart and check the internals over...give it a good cleaning, lubrication, and dielectric grease on all the contacts / power connections.
I'm sure that you don't want to be in the middle of plowing snow, and have it quit altogether. It's still early...so check it over and give the winch some TLC.

Is it made in China? If so , that's your problem

Here is my set up. I had my winch mounted to a stock rack last year, but it was starting to bow, so I took a trashed rack, straightened it out, and plated it. 10 gauge steel, cut the side supports off and moved them as far forward as I could. Welded the 2 middle tubes into the bottom of the plate. Coated in Duplicolor bedliner. Its built like a brick craphouse now... My fender is just laying on the front tire in the pic. Superwinch 2000lbs, synthetic winch cable, and an aluminum hause. Its a little industrial looking, so I think I am going to put a few speed holes in the side gussets. Like the foot prints in the dust? Yeah, I can stand on it with all my 210 lbs... The winch is set so far back, because I am mounting my gun rack on the front as well...

Take the end cap off and have a look inside. Intermittent operation by any brushed DC motor is generally caused by either bad brushes, or bad contacts.

what are you using for a battery?
I heard regulation lawn mower batteries will fit in the trunk and they are seriously on sale this time of year too.

Hey thanks for posting that Thorpe! That's a pretty sweet lookin set up...I was thinking something along those lines, just not quite sure yet...I don't wanna run a plow with mine necessarily, just something to drag it out if/when I bury it...Thanks again dude, that's pretty nice...

Mine doubles as a plow winch and a Outlander Recovery Device... (my buddy has a Outlander 400) I really like having it for playing in the mud and snow. Been used a few times to get out of the stinky stuff! I have been running my winch straight from the BR battery without any issues, so I wouldnt bother with an aux. battery in the trunk. I do highly recommend the synthetic winch cable though... Its sweet. Rated at some insane number, (something like 8800 lbs) no wire fray, floats on water... (granted the hook acts as an anchor) doesnt recoil... Worth the money IMO

Hahahaha!!! Just what I was looking for...
What's not "Made In China" anymore...it's actually pretty amazing though...they make pretty much 99% of all the crap us north americans purchase.
I would rather see "Made In Japan".

Same here man, Japan , Germany and US make some of the longest lasting stuff.

And I third that notion. Chinese stuff works, and for cheap, but doesn't always last as long. I'd hate to buy a car that had the label "Made in China"

I pulled her all apart and found one of the brushes was stuck in the holder. A little cleaning and it works like a champ!

Friend of mine had a winch to raise & lower his plow blade, and he was always complaining that the weight of the plow made it difficult for him to turn the handlebars. He finally got sick of it and connected the plow set-up the right way to the bottom of his frame with a small chain to raise & lower it. It's a pretty cool set-up.
