Got this 250sx in pretty decent shape, 1 owner but in boxes of parts. Previous owner tried changing swinger bearings and pulled output shaft out and gave up trying to get it back. I by some higher power got it back in and bolted back up after hours and beers and beers and hours:lock::lock: It shifts thru the gears up and down by hand......not running. My ???? are there or is there anything that would drop out off shaft other than left side washer and spacer that was on it or could it be a small miracle?? Anyone ever been down this road???? Guess I wont know till I get it running??? I find it hard to beleive it may be in complete and the right way but I guess anything is possible....

Left side washer? There is a thrust washer which WILL fall down if the shaft is removed and nothing holds it up. (right side?)

Also there's a gear and two clips on the left side of the shaft. Just get that washer back in place and the rest should be pretty straightforward. But I'd check the exploded diagram to be sure.

I recall simply unbolting the swing arm and moving it back a little to change bearings, races and seals 85sx
and the U joint simply slid off the splines and simply went back on

but

It sounds like the guy took off the whole right angle main output shaft housing apart?

I was told to do it that way, but I'm lazy and like to get away with the easiest way.

Prob the most inportant thing is to make sure there is correct ring and pinion backlash that takes output power from the engine, to right angle it to the rear wheel.

Make sure the spacers/shims are in there and you DO have correct backlash if that's the parts you're talking about.

Got it all together now.....time will tell if it is right??? Are you talking backlash adjustment on rear end or side shaft???

well?
I should look but in order for the engine spin to take a right angle and head towards the rear, it should have a ring and pinion type setup in there.

A check could be as simple as wiggling the output shaft in a few different positions to make sure it has a tiny slight click when the gears mesh, indicating that they are not buried into each other.Very easy before the driveshaft Ujoint goes on.

I'd look at the parts diag or dowload the manual from 'world class help' section on here. and make sure there aren't any shim looking spacers missing.

You're gonna love that machine, but be careful, they tend to multiply.

lol at the above 'multiply advisory' lol.

I bought my 85sx as a parts bike with working motor and missing/destroyed/trashed everything else for 500$. I rebuilt the diff myself but had to take it to honda to have them press a few bearings if I recall correctly. I pressed the bearings in myself etc etc. The shaft was cake, it wasnt too dificult to understand the assembly of it. After I did the full rebuild of the bike though, I hd the swing arm bearings go out on it; whenever you hit the throttle it would cause the bike to completely tweek clockwise a few inches due to the shaft drive lol
