My friends 85 250es has a really bad clutch. Its still good for hauling wood at low rpm's, but as soon as you tramp on it it doesn't pull nearly as hard as it should. He is using Castrol 20w50 in it. I've heard that there is a certain type of oil that breaks down clutch fibers, or just simply allows them to slip. is this true? His bike was never like this before we put this oil in. Any help is appreciated!

ATV or motorcycle oils have a clutch additive in them for a wet style clutch. (kind of a friction modifier like adding posi fluid to a rear axle) Time for a fresh clutch and springs.... I did them not long ago on my BR, and have been using valvoline atv oil without issue so far....

Car oils have a seal type of print on them. If they have the seal there no good for atv's. I used regular napa oil that doesn't have a seal and my clutch is great. It is brand new though so..idk. I've never had a problem!

I can get the Valvoline for 3.50 a quart here... Way too inexpensive to mess around with it... When I did my new clutch, I put the heavier springs in (15% heavier I believe) and really like how it changed the shift too... I would recommend that upgrade while you are doing a new clutch. (I think they were about 15 bucks)

Back to the Oil issues again......I run Mobile 1 10w30 in everything I own (except 2 strokes) and have never had a problem. My clutches never slip, my seals don't leak (anymore than before, Knock on wood.) and my pistons seem to stay inside the motor! I really don't change any of my vechicles oils freaquently or often. A buddy sent in a oil sample of it after a year in his car and it came back 92% oil life. So until proven wrong I'll stick by it.
