First of all, I have an 85' 250sx that I am going to rebuild. I could honestly use some help with a few questions. Any help is appreciated..

1. Is there a way to make the rear end wider?... Another option besides spacers?

2. Is there a way to get rid of the big drum brake on the right hand side of the rear? That thing is huge! Are there other options for brakes on the rear?

3. Any way to extend the wheelbase? I know this might be hard, being that it is shaft driven.

4. I love that it's electric start, and know it has a kick start as backup... Is there a way to make it pull start, instead of kick?

These are just some odds and ends that I'm trying to figure out. Thanks!

Why would you rather a pull start ?

Hmm I guess you are in Cali and never have to deal with Canadian Winters.....A pull start kills your hands when its -22 F and you want to go for a ride.

That would be awesome if you could put disk brakes on a 250sx, I wonder if it's been done ?

im pretty sure you caant widen the rear axel let alone replace a stock one because its shaft driven i think you may just have to leave it how it iss lol and as far as the brake i dont think so because on a chaiin drive atc there are little teeth taht the disk slides onto and the original axel for a 250sx does not have sorry buddy. i had a two fifty sx i tried to mod it as much as i could all i was able to do was weld a fmf silencer on it and new plastics and blue lights everywhere lol let me know if you need any help by the way i got some brand new fenders for the 85 sx im tryin to sell my my 250sx got stollen almost two years ago fenders are just sitting in my closet brand new black leather seat too!!

Some people put a 200x front end on their SX with disk brakes but I cant figure out how you would put a disk brake at the back.

Im not sure on any different brake setups but I put 1.5 highlifter wheel spacers on mine and it made a huge difference in turning and overall stability. I also put 22-11-8 kenda klaw xcr tires on the rear and it gives it a better look IMO

yeah i had some wide flats on mine it looked pretty sweet and yeah i dont think you can do anything about the rear brake since its like inside the wheel lol

wider off set rims would make it wider, also see if any other ATV hubs fit on it and see if they are wider (300ex hubs on a atc110 will make it wider and bolts on). getting new offset rims can make it up to 3-5 inches wider all together and are generally cheaper then spacers.

did the big reds (250s) have a pullstarter back up? if so maybe one of those would fit on the sx since they are similar engines

Here ya go! www.motovan.com on page 606 in the brakes section is a conversion, it goes as small as the FourTax 350 & is pricey. I remember Brapp telling me about the kit in January. The pic looks just like the SX rear.
I tried to link it, but failed.

No they dont, BR and SX have the same same engine except for color and maybe gearing

Note, NO OTHER HUBS FIT A 250SX and spacers make it wider and more susceptible to bending.

1) NO - the whole thing bolts together and it bends like mad.
2) NO - nope, but you can change to an 86/87 rear end which seals much better. Or, if your really good, it could be removed and replaced with disc brakes, LOTS of work though.
3) NO - You would have to lengthen the driveshaft and both sides, it would be a nightmare IMHO.
4) You have 2 starting choices, fix them and enjoy them. 250CC pull starts aren't fun....

Yes! The entire rear from a '86 TRX250 can be put in. You would need everything from the swingarm bearings back; swinger, driveshaft, rear axle assembly and nine inch rims. You will have to come up with a solution for mounting the rear shock to the swingarm. The TRX swinger is 3 inches longer than the SX. I like the extra wheelbase for climbing steep hills and allowing me to run 25' tires on my SX. Check the link in my signature below to see how I put my SX together.

Thanks guys for the responses... I know the questions might have been random, but there is a purpose... The main reasons for these was for some simplicity. We've had this sx for a long time, and it has pretty much just sat for the past few years. My plans are to actually build a golf cart with it. Some of these questions were meant for that purpose. I am in the process of rebuilding the whole sx right now, and get it running again. Who knows, I might rebuild and ride, but I honestly have no use for it. No one uses it, and already have 2 quads...
