pull starter issue

Today i finally decided to rope the pull starter on my new 185 and all went well until i put it on, the rope pulls back good and stuff but when i pull it it doesnt feel like the dogs catch ( they honestly dont catch). i have to kind of jerk it until i feel it catch and then pull. did i do something wrong?

Not enough tension before locking the friction plate down, it sounds like. Or the rope is too long.

True^^ , and also lubricate the parts in the recoil starter
