So I've been trying to get my 175 started, so I've been push starting it (it won't pull start), and it has worked for me many times. But every once in a while, it almost sounds like it doesn't engage properly when I throw it into 1st. Could I be wrecking something by popping it into gear?

I dont' know about the pop starting hurting your tranny but rebuilding the top end is super easy on these things. Just pop the cylinder head off, then the cylinder, then pry the circlip holding the piston ring in place and then pull the piston off. Put new rings on the piston, clean everything up and you should be good to go.
you can even do it with the engine in the trike.
the reason why I suggest this is because not being able to pull start an engine but being able to push start it is a tell-tale sign of low compression.
