If a person was to install a timing chain one tooth off before or after TDC, would an trike/quad engine run?
Depending on the Machine/motor...Yes and no.....And not Run Good at that.

If it does "run" You would most likely get a lot of pops and backfires. Either through the carb or exhaust. Depending on which way the tooth is off.

Should probably put this in quad central but here it goes; I put the top end together on the kids Suzuki 230 quad and it was impossible to keep the piston at TDC without the crank weights pulling it down a little. I tried to line up the two marks on the cam to correspond with the top of the head casting as the manual said to do but it also wasn't perfectly aligned probably due to the piston being slightly downward. It seems to be running fine but I want to rule out that I have mistakenly put it out of time.
I would Not worry to much about it, It cant be a bit trick'y To set like that at times without a Lock Bolt on the crank, You would Notice if it was off that far either way...it would run like Sht.. There Big teeth.. on the sprocket's...

Thanks for the peace of mind. The thing started on the second kick after putting it together. This was my first top end job. I only deal with Honda's and they never need engine work! lol
