View Full Version : my tri-z rider build.

hey there i am somewhat new to tri-z's, but this ain't my first rodeo if you know what i mean. i bought a couple z's a while back hoping to build one nice one from the three i have, well so far its looking good, i picked up a frame and swinger in my travels that i just painted up, i spent hours cleaning up a set of rear plastices and airbox shroud. i have yet to make myself a seat cover, i need a few gaskets and a little more time to get the motor ready to pop in. i plan on making a few radical changes to it, im no longer going to use the rear mounted gas tank, i will make one that will neatly sit under the easily removable airbox cover. as for the airbox i want to replace the whole setup with a clamp on uni foam filter. i already removed all of the un-needed frame mount tabs to give the trike a nice clean look, i also want to eliminate all unnecessary wiring, and the headlight assembly. and i plan on using a set of 2006 yz450f rad shrouds like on the tri-z450. i want this pretty much just to take for a ride once in a while so i can go for rides with my g/f and we both have something to ride, im not trying to build a show bike or anything, just a useful, decent looking z.
anyway tell me what you think,

few frame modifications

and my one of my other z's i just took the motor out of.

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4294.jpg

so im pretty pleased so far, i pretty much have a roller ready to pop a motor in when i get time.
but i had a couple of questions,
what footpegs bolt right up to the z?
why have i heard some people use yz pistons?
what is the stock tri-z plug?
i will be putting a aftermarket exhaust on, and after that whats the best price per hp upgrade for power?
what are the stock rear shock bolt sizes? (i didnt measure it this wknd and i want to get the ss bolts this week)
what grab bars bolt on, or with little modifications?

thanks for all the interest. i guarantee there will be more to come.

okay so i really want to put yzf shrouds on just like the tri-z450, does anyone have closeup pictures of them? has anyone else done it?

I haven't seen much retro fitting of plastics on the Z. There's been discussions of it but not any pics. that I know of.

i want white shrouds, im not much for painting plastics either, you cant buy white ones anywhere, and any shroud in general is impossible to find.

nah swampthing its just a regular gas ranger i rebuilt this spring, its the first vehicle i ever painted and it turned out great, i also put new tranny and clutch, balljoints, tierods, and brakes all by myself. it sits on some keystone rims, with 33x12.5" bfg mud terrains and about 5 inches of lift. its got the 3.0 l in it! lol

alright so monday i went on a bit of a road trip to go look at some tri-z parts, i drove about 3 1/2 hours to pickup the exhaust from a guy. i ended up chatting with him for a while, and seeing all the other stuff he had, he had 2 tri z frames, one bare with nothing on it, the other had everything but the gas tank, fenders, and rear wheels. for both frames, and motors that had been sitting outside without carbs for years he wanted $200, and they both had ownerships! i told him if they were there in the spring i would take them for extra parts, but i already have enough tri-z parts laying around. i also found out he used to own both my white, and red tri z's, its amazing how this stuff gets around! i also went about an extra hour or so to get the 450r shock and footopegs, and ended up with some more goodies,

for $200 i purchased
full aftermarkt tri z exhaust (fatty is rusty, but very solid, and zero dents, silencer is mint)
tri z airbox shroud
400ex footpegs
2007 trx 450r rear shock
billet inline super cooler
dvx jetkit
dvx exhaust hotcam
answer fatbars
2 sets of handguards
wr426f controls, perches, levers, throttle, and a sweet little headlight/kill switch
ltr450 thumb throttler

not a bad investment at all!
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/016-2.jpg

anyway, as for mounting the 450r rear shock its very close to bolting right in. the only thing is that the trx shock has a yoke at the bottom, and that the eye to eye is 15" as opposed to the z's 13.75". the yoke itself is too wide for the z linkage at at the bottom, and the stock mount hole is too far down at the bottom.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/019.jpg

but this is only a minor speedbump for a thinker like myself. if we twist the yoke sideways, the top of the yoke is 1/8" from being parallel with the stock z shock, and its thin enough to fit in the stock linkage with ease. that means all i have to do is machine a spacer to fit directly inside of the yoke, with the two mounting holes perpendicular to each other so that the top hole will be facing sideways to the yoke, and the hole will be touching the top of the yoke.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/020.jpg

i made a mock spacer plate out of some cheap almuminum tube i had laying around, and she bolts right in, and works excellent.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/PIC00002.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/PIC00003.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/PIC00005.jpg

it even works so well that that 1/8" doesnt affect the stock seat height, or swingarm angle.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/PIC00007.jpg

so to all the dudes who said it wasnt possible without heavily modifying my frame...........well there you have it.

i also made a design for my top mounted gas tank, its extremely simple. all i did was walk around the garage finding different things that would be the right size and voila, a folgers can fits right in, then if i add an extra 1/2 of a can cut on an angle, and a fuel neck, i have a top mounted tank that will hold enough fuel for what im gonna do. i will just try to find some tubing that size, that is thin enough not to be heavy, and weld the cap and fuel outlet to it. and it fits nicely under the shroud. dont laugh its just a prototype.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/013-3.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/014-2.jpg

and btw, this is obviously why i didnt pickup those 2 other z's on my travels.......i already have these three, plus a mountain of parts!

DC plastics sales new white shrouds for the TRI-Z for about $60 for a pair. Here is the link and you just have to call or email them to request a specific color.

Okay well its been a while but i just puicked up some YZF shrouds for 20 bucks from a guy on a website called kijiji, they had graphics on them and werent in the greatsest of shape but i can clean em up and make them fit.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4390.jpg
i traced them out and cut them with a dremel cutting wheel , i left the graphics on for now incase i slipped i wouldnt damage the plastics themselves.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4392.jpg
i then test fit them and traced out where the lines didnt quite line up with the frame straight, and sanded them down by hand to make them fit a little better. after that i removed the graphics and shined them to near perfection.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4393.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4391.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4395-1.jpg
i made relocation brackets out of small pieces of aluminum, for the bottom mounts, and just used the stock mounts for the bottoms. the right side shroud needed a little manipulating since the rad cap hits the shroud, i heated it up with a heat gun and "moulded" it into shape, you cant even tell though.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4394.jpg
the only beef i have with the way they look is that they are not 100% symetrical on both sides to each other, you cant tell by looking at the front or each side but its somewhat apparent looking from the rear.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4398.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/DSCF4396.jpg
i also finally got my answer fatbars mounted with my new ODI grips ,and i will be using the ltr450 throttle assembly, and msr quick adjust perch.

okay so i did something called "soda blasting" to a few parts, i just used a simple snadblasting gun, and used baking soda instead of sand.

heres the soda

parts to blast

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/P_00382.jpg

the carb turned out real nice, it had a serious case of bad gas syndrome, and needed a throurough cleaning, the soda was gentle enough to clean even the internal parts of the carb!

i also did my water pump cover on my crack free clutch cover!
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/P_00375.jpg

now all i need is a polishing kit from harbour freight and im ready to roll, within the next couple days i should have my bottom painted. im looking for a bolt kit for it, and some nice looking rad hoses. what do you guys use for the clear rad hose? where can i get it and how does it bend without kinking?

im asking because i thought the only difference was the jets, and here i am with a box of carbs, and parts, trying to make a good one... lol

okay so i finally got around to doing some work on my motor, i got my crank bearings, seals, and gaskets from ebay in the mail.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/HastingsHighlands-20110217-00042.jpg

i have it just about together minus the kicker gear and the flywheel
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/HastingsHighlands-20110217-00041.jpg

i noticed this little suprise by the gear when i tore it apart, would everyone say its okay to run it like that or is it gonna break the case?
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/jmax857/HastingsHighlands-20110217-00043.jpg

im taking my piston and ctlinder to the machine shop tommorrow, then i will finish the rest of the assembly, one other question i had was what you guys use to seal your case halves i thought it used a gasket before hand. when i got the kit i was like wtf!!!, then i remembered alot of stuff doesnt use gaskets. i sealed it with permatex red high temp rtv, i have used threebond and yamabond before aswell as the red permatex with no issues but i got reading online and people are saying its bad to use the rtv? am i best off to split it again and use yamabond? ive used this stuff before with no problems but not on a 2 stroke.

tri-Z ripper
02-18-2011, 03:36 PM
I would use yamabond. I've also been told no RTV
Also unless you only ride when it's dry or on a track! Why would you get rid of the yamaha oem snorkel? Do you really think you'll gain much? Prob not just run no lid on the air box and try that.

i would never trust rtv on such a thin sealing surface as cases.. I know a guy that used RTV on his cases and it worked fine.. but i've seen it leak also... Why would you chance it when threebond/yamahabond is cheap and is made for the job?

i live in a small town and yamabond, hondabond, threebond, are nowhere to be found. i came across permatex motoseal, it is made for sealing crankcase halves and is supposed to be similar to yamabond.

after i got it back together i gave it a good cleaning, light sanding and turned it upside down and painted the bottom half of the crankcase, when i get back to it this weekend ill paint the top half. then im ready to install my top end.

i think it happens when the cover breaks, and the tab that hold the gear in place comes off and you kick it with full force into the side of the case, i have 4 crankcase halves and all of them have this hole!

and its been getting a little warmer out lately, and i had a few things left to paint. i couldnt decide on a colour, i had thought about pink. when i went to carquest i asked for the colour book to look for pink paint. apparently they mixed a pint for a guy just so he could see the colour, so he could paint his wifes jeep. so i got a deal on the paint, and i was happy. when i sprayed it, it isnt exactly the colour of pink i was hoping for. its very pretty pink barbie pink if you know what i mean. i sprayed my gas tank cover, rad brackets, carb bowl, handlebar clamps, rear axle carrier, boost bottle bracket, and a couple more small things.

so i did some "custom persuading"on the stock gas tank. i couldnt bring myself to use a tiny fuel tank mounted up top, i knew it would be nothing but a headache. so i had the trx shock and i had to make it work. so u used my fancy heat gun and a couple washers, and voila! fits like a dream! (and yes i checked the travel to see if it touches when bottomed out)

Very nice! You need to put this in the Tri-Z compatible parts thread with slight description.

i wouldnt say its compatible. it defiantely was not an easy process getting that shock to work.

so tonite things fell together pretty well. i got some parts i ordered, i threw my piston in, hooked up my new fuel pump, routed the gas line, put on my exhaust, and started kicking.

first off it wanted nothing to do with starting, i gave it a spray of gas, started, then died, started than died.
turns out when i cleaned the carb i forgot to blow out the passage that feeds the needle valve, clogged right up and the carb bowl was empty.
fixed that up, and 2nd kick she fired right up.
but i have a few concerns. after screwing the screw on the left hand side (what i believe to be the idle screw) all of the way in, i was able to achieve idle. does this mean it is runing too rich? it also will NOT run at all, with the choke on. i honestly started it, let it warm up. and shut it down. i did this about 3 to 4 times. i have not tried driving it, as i have a few things on the chassis that need to be dealt with before it is drivable. im not too familiar with these carbs anymore. i also might be getting a pj 34mm to put on there, but it might be easier to get it to work this way first. anyway, im happy, idles great, starts right up after my fresh rebuild.

]So I figure I should finish off this build thread before I start another one for my tri z 500.
Just to fill everyone in I had many major engine hurdles which greatly slowed down my progress aswell as all the time I been occupied with work. I had a problem with first gear when I first put the engine together. Replaced the 6 speed with a 5 speed and after only about an hour on the bike something broke inside and blew a hole in my crankcase. Needless to say im good at doing z bottoms now.
I put about 25hrs on it this summer I believe and it runs and drives great. I got to go for a few awesome rides and it was definately worth all the work and headaches. Heres a few pics of what it looks like now as an almost finished project (because a project is never really finished) and I hope you enjoy it And be sure to comment and give some feedback

thats weird i have the same hole by my kicker too.noticed when i replaced my shift shaft and clutch etc.Been running fine all along
Yea I've had that on my last z and clutch case went on that. Got sold not long after but I'm sure it's still going strong.
Love the build and I think I'm going to give that shock a try. Could you upload a pic of the spacer you made and you say the top mounts right in? Did you play with the front at all?
Not a pink lover but the colours do go well.
Good work pal

Unfortunately I dont have a pic of the spacer. Its just a sloid block of aluminum cut to fit inside the yoke. 1 hole ddilled to line up with with thw holes In the trx shock and one going the opposite direction to go into the wjshbone bolt. The fuel tank is the hardest part. I ruined one tank trying to heat it up and shape it. And the one thats on there took me around 3 hours with a heatgun. I dont recomend even trying it unless you bave a spare tank.

Ha I was wondering how long it took I do have a couple of tanks and may av a go but if I bust one ill leave it how it is, do you like the ride with the shock? Not to stiff?

jmax857

No Not too stiff. It really awakens the fact that my forks are crap though. I have it on one of the softest settings. No problems runnin it through the woops and it seems to put the power to the ground well.

my first thought of using black and white trimmed with a little lime green and pink was pretty ugly, but the way you've done it is pretty nice. not too much, but enough to set it off. heck of a job on it for just wanting an extra ride. :beer
very nice ranger BTW. the stacks do set it apart from others for sure. they're not my cup of tea, but it's your truck not mine. still a nice truck though. also notced in those last pics you posted the stacks are gone. hope you didn't let these yahoos peer pressure ya into it. :beer

No unfortunately it went into the ditch and mr. Tree limb literally broke them off the truck. I managed to scrape up enough material that was srltraight tube from one ti do this.

I also recently with a little pressure from my better half sold it off to buy something more practical158521
