i got a 1982 honda 110. just had the motor bored, new piston rings and valves. other wise bike is completely original. starts right up when its cold but when it starts getting running warm/hot it will sputter and die out. the only way for me to get it started back up is by using the choke for a split second then quickly turning it off i can keep it running for about 10 feet then it sputts and dies back out. the carb has just been recently rebuilt with all new components.and my gas tank is spotless inside. just wondering if anyone had this issue ever. didnt just want to start swapping parts out like coil or cdi, wanted a little insight before i start dumping more money into it. thank you

why would the engine over heat though? i can ride for about 20 mins from start up and its like a brand new trike. i havent read the temperature yet but that might be my next step

my vote is on the coil(alternater) breaking down.

the spark plug was brand new when the motor got rebuilt, after break in i put another new plug in and the one that came out was black which i thought was from the excess oil from the break in, i have the carb at the stock settings so i didnt think it was running rich but with the new plug the motor is still running the same i have taken it out to see the color of this one yet

if you think its the coil which one would you suggest i buy? i can get a no name coil off ebay for 24.95 or i can get an original oem honda one off ebay right off the trike for the same price. do i take the chance on a new knock off or a 28 year old original?

Take the plug out and that will be helpful to know the color. Also if it was just rebuilt, did you do a leakdown test? Might be getting too hot.

check your new plug first before buying new parts.get a multimeter and check your electrics part by part.but check the plug first.my bet is it is running hot

I'd read the resistance in the coil and other electrical parts before I bought new ones.

No on the EBAY coil, yes on OEM.......

why would the motor be running hot and im not sure what a leakdown test is if you could describe that to me thanks!

After a engine rebuild you should always check ANY engine to make sure all gaskets and seals are OK to go. Best way is to plug the holes (exhaust, intake, spark) and put about 7psi of air in the motor and leave it for a few hours. If the PSI has dropped, you have a air leak. If the PSI is the same, you should be good to go.

Also have you checked the compression on the motor?

I would follow the others advice and check the electrical, make sure when you re-installed the engine that no wires were nicked or shorted.

the engine got a new gasket kit during the rebuild what is the propper way to fill the motor with air?? i have not checked the compression on the motor either i just got it back from being fixed and have just been tinkering with small stuff like carb settings and such

Try running the trike with the fuel cap off. Maybe the vent for the fuel cap is plugged? Total cost $0 and a few minutes of your time. If not a plugged fuel cap, maybe check for a plugged fuel line. Check for anything plugging your fuel lines or fuel filter screen. If plug is wet/black then I would say oil problem, if dry black, then fuel problem. Start going through your electrics for your system. I honestly can't remember if 82 is points or cdi. If points, go through and check points settings and maybe file your points. Go through and check your valve tappet clearances as well. Just cause it's freshly rebuilt, doesn't mean everything is set right.

My bet is on the valve adjustment . New valves need to be checked after first warm up .

setting the carb to wrong settings can cause your engine to overheat.

the proper carb settings and valve settings for your trike are here.

+1 on that, that is what i first figured i just havent gotten a change to tear into anything and it does have cdi, it says it right on the head. i tried using the trike with the gas tank vent turned on and off didnt think to try it with out the cap, i did check the fuel lines along with the carb and all seems to be well. im calling it a night for now as it is close to 11pm if anyone else has anything helpful feel free to put it down, i'll take all the advise i can get thanks again everyone
