I am buying a supposed 1986 atc 250R. I am having to buy remotely, so I asked for several pictures. My question concerns the Head. From the majority of engine assemblies I have seen for the 86 and 85 head, the intake, and exhaust on the head seems to be kind of elongated, the flanges look to be 3 to 4 inches from the head. On the 250r I am buying, the flanges look to be almost flush with the head, also the bolt threads bulge on the outside of the head in a different pattern. I am curious if maybe there were different heads manufactured, or possibly after market, or if maybe the head I have is from a trx, or dirt bike. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like an aftermarket cylinder to me. The area above the exhaust port doesn't look stock.

well the guy said it had been bored 80 over, and a larger carb put on it as well. Is a pro cross cylinder good?

oh I guess while I am asking, I found an 1987 200x, is very good condition, not mint, but close, the guy is asking $3200. A little steep for a 200x, but the year is good. What do you guys think?

if its bored .080 over it will need to be resleeved.. $$$$$ and the shock is 85, do you have more pictures of it?

this was the add. I realize it is not mint condition, but it may be something I can work with to restore.

This 1986 Honda ATC 250R is in truly mint condition, here at C/T Grass, Dirt & Snow we do everything from atv's to snowmobiles, lawn & garden equip., snowblowers and much more. This 250R got a new Hot Rods crank, wiseco 80 over piston and rings, carrier bearings, brake pads, and other misc. parts. It also has a FMF full exhaust with a oversized carb. to give it even more power which it wasn't lacking for to begin with.

I would say that is a larger aftermarket cylinder. It looks similar to my buddys R that has a 370 kit. So it may be that or possibly a 310 cylinder...

my $0.02

That is in fact a 1985 250R judging by the pics.

The sprocket is on backwards in the rear. That ring should face the carrier.
The shock difference was the 86 had a gold adjuster knob and the 85 had a black knob.
Your has the 85 seat too.
The cases in the engine appear to be from an 86.
As in most cases, I am sure it is a hodge podge of both years mixed together.
That is definately a aftermarket jug on there. I would guess a 310 cylinder, but I dont know what brand.
The trike needs some work as he stated, but it would take alot to "Restore" that to OEM specs. But depending on the price, it is worth considering. If you plan on a full out OEM Exact restoration, you will put thousands into it to make it showroom condidition like the day it rolled off the line.
Much of the OEM parts are discontinued, and if you can find them OEM< it will cost you major bucks to get them parts for a restore.
If your definition of "restore" is to fix it up nice, and reliable using aftermarket parts for a rider, then taht is easier and cheaper to accomplish.

As stated, if that jug needs bored at .80 over, you are talking a re-sleeve or new aftermarket cylinder. And that will be more expensive than a standard rebuild.
And more pics would help in value of estimation too.
Right now with the info I have on it, I would estimate its value to be around $1100 to $1500 and I am being optimistic on that.
The low end estimate in my eyes would be around $850- $1100 just by the pics and little info. It already needs a rebuild right out of the hole. To pay 1800$ you should be able to ride that thing as is with almost no mechanical work needed.
It does not sound like he knows what he has, or he would have stated what type of Jug is on it.

It looks to be well ridden, but not totally beat to crap. I would ask for pics of the frame just behind the Exhaust head pipe and under the fuel tank.
Those are the areas prone for cracking on trikes that have been raced and jumped alot.

Don't pay more than $1000, I see at least $500 to make it right and alot of time and labor, read Mosh's info carefully. Lots of rear end work.

i saw that ad on CL too! its a beautiful '87 200x, but the price just seems quite steep to me....i would be willing to pay up to $2000 myself, if after looking at in person it is truly as mint as advertised, but no more than $2000. Hes dreaming to think he will get $3200, its a nice trike and all, but not worth $3200 IMHO
