Hello Friend

I pick up this buggy the other day. I cannot find out any info on this Cammex motor. The reason I am posting here is for I found a few threads in this forum about Cammex. Can anyone tell me what I have? How big is the motor.

Also what is this buggy? Was it raced in a class back in the day? If so what class would it have ran in? Basically I know nothing about it at all. Was told it was a race motor from the 80's. The last owner had a shop put the motor togather. They told him he has to run race gas. I thought it might be a Odyessy motor with a cammex jug and head. But I se the CRP castings in the black jug and head.

Hoping to find the member in this forum that was part of Cammex racing. I seen his post here but cannot find it again.

Here are some pics. I paid $700 and it rips. Any info in what I have would be really cool.

I understand that friend. The reason I posted here was that the only info that I could find on Cammex was for water cooled heads thay made for the ATC250r in the 80's. Was just hoping to find a good lead here. I also own trikes and been a member here for a little bit. Have you ever heard of Cammex? Thanks

Thanks man. Jut what I was hoping for. Your getting me exited now. I plan on restoring it and keeping it just how it was in the 80's

Does this have works shocks? Do they have a class for these modified odyessy's?

Thanks again

They don't have classes for them any more of course, but they did. Calvin Pollet now owns CPI which designs and casts Banshee and 250R big bore cylinders. Yes the rear shocks are Works and the fronts look like Ohlins which were definitely the best back in the 80's. The cylinder is probably like a cr250 cylinder cast to fit to the aircooled ody bottom end. Do you have any old 3 wheeler mags with them in it? I can scan some old Odyssey stuff and post it here if you like. The expansion chamber is a hand made cone pipe too. Real nice Odyssey.

Cammex was in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma which is about a 5 mile drive from my house.

Throw some paddles on that, and get some.. It looks like it would be a blast and plenty powerful as well. You might get an extra belt for the tranny if you haven't already. And please post some shots of it out at the dunes.

... I see the CRP castings in the black jug and head.

You do indeed have a piece of Odyssey Racing history, GREAT FIND!
The engine is a CAMMEX Racing Products, (CRP) 250cc engine.....(unless it had one of the "Open Class" engines, then it could be as large as a 360cc), The cylinder was the same cylinder and head that we made to fit onto the 81-84 ATC250R engine, that cylinder and head were built for the 250 class AND the open class, so the only way to tell which you may have is to pull the head and take some measurements.
We built the cases for the Odyssey to adapt the existing Cammex cylinders to that engine compartment. The engine should run very well, ones just like that, (in fact....could have been that one....lol), won quite a few AATVA Nationals in their day.
There were many guys that ran the engines, but you might look for anything about one of the "Bagus" brothers, (may have been spelled "Bogus"), the two brothers ran very hard, won several major races, and I believe at least one of them, (Mike Bagus.....I think), either won or took 2nd in the National Championship Points a year or two.

I WOULD LOVE to find one of those for playing at Little Sahara, even though they were closed course machines, (before there were "side-by-sides"....lol), they would be a BLAST in the dunes!
When you have to tear it down, take down some numbers and call the shop.....I would be glad to help you keep it fresh and going strong.

Thanks you so much for the info. I will indeed bring this machine back to it's former glory. It's going to be my winter project for sure. I take it this would be a race gas only motor right?

Looks like I am just missing the original radiator and tires from what I can tell. The above scans helps out a lot. I will be posting a video here if it stops raining here in Oregon.

You said the motor should run well. It does indeed. granted I just ride it down my street so I really do not know how the top end will be yet. I can tell you it pulls hard. Hard enough to do wheels stands on pavement.

Anyway thanks for the info and thank you for doing what you do. I will stay in contact and send you some pics when this machine is restored. I will be making a build thread over at mini buggy . net. I will send you a link of that as well.

Also thanks moderators for letting me post a buggy in your 3 wheel world here. I am sure other people looking for Cammex in the future will find this helpfull.

Very cool machine and an awesome piece from the 80's.
I for one would love to keep track of your build-up if the moderators see fit. Technically it isnt a 3 wheeler however if you were from that era like I am the Odysseys were a part of the culture as well..!!

If you ever had a chance to try a last generation 350cc Odyssey or even better a 400cc Pilot they were certainly a blast. I can't even inagine a full race machine like the one in this post.

Funny how Honda Automotive has recycled the names of both of these off road machines the Odyssey and Pilot. Makes it a pain in the butt to do web searches too.

You have a very cool old racer there. Its a modified FL250 odyssey. The rear shocks are old WORKS probably made for that buggy and valved for it and the rider. The frame is entirely aftermarket, might be a challenger style frame. In any case I rebuilt one of these a few years ago and that will be a very fun little machine. I would go through those u-joints and freshen them up. Actually, heres a pic of the one I rebuilt: http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/TwilightOfHeaven/Odyssey/DSC_0869.jpg

Few pieces of advice; Check out that motor ASAP, make sure its all fresh, then work on jetting. I suggest joining this site here, and these guys know tons more about the Odyssey world than most do! www.pilotodyssey.com

Last owner told me when he got the buggy the motor was in a box. He paid to have shop put it back running. I do not know wht all they did. During the restore I will have it check out again. I already checked with works for a rebiuld of both shocks. The rear right shock has no seal at all right now. I think beyond that I will be able to restore this back to it's original glory. She will get powder coating or por15 and the whole 9 yards. When get the shocks fixed I will take it out for a test run. If it runs well I will start the make over.

Can anyone tell what type or radiators are on the pics above? I want to stay era correct in this build now. Would also be great to track down the original builder as well. Whats else is funny is that there are sharpie pen writting all over the head and case. Looks like phone numbers but could be measurements of some sort. I can swear there are two different phone numbers on the head.

I just found out the writter to this Artical is a member of this group? oldfart Former publisher of 3Wheeling magazine. I sent him a PM hoping he will chime in. This site is great. I found the engine maker here. anther member sent my pics and articals of my type of cars. And the writter of the articals is also a member here.

So for this reason I keep poping up in the three wheeler forum. Sorry but all my research leads me back to this site. I have three wheelers as well and have been a member her long before I got my buggy. Thanks for the help and putting up with me.

The top end on your FL is the same one Calvin built and we ran on the race team trikes. It turned the 82-84 models into water cooled machines. Same cylinder was used on the 200 kits also.

Oh yea, does your motor have the waterpump, or is it perculator style. Meaning does it circulate water via hot water transfer/wanting to rise to radiator forcing cooler water down to motor.

All you need is a Hillside Honda body and you would be good to go!

I am not sure. But from the color of wires coming out of the engine. I am guessing standard fl250 odyssey stator. I worked on lots of fl250 so I know the wire colors. But i have not had the cover off yet. It has cdi coil. I have not been able to ID the CDI unit though. Take a look....
