I bought one of these earlier this week, blue 85 model. The manual can be downloaded here http://72.52.143.80/~trikes/ . Mine was running and rideable but in need of some attention. I rode it a bit but just can't stand to ride something in such need, it just seems cruel to such an enjoyable bike. Semi auto, electric start and very mild runners as I remembered. I figured it would be great for the wife. I wasn't even sure what mine was, VIN search shows that I have a 1985 YTM225DX. I thought that was what it was but the blue threw me off, I didn't know that they came in blue but the VIN doesn't lie. It didn't really matter, a running 3 wheeler in this area is rare. One for a buck 50 is a taker no matter what.

I have 2 and love them both. They are both keepers for me.

I did some initial testing on mine. The pressure showing on my compression gauge is right around 115 psi and the MANUAL show service limits at 114 psi and I have some seepage around the head gasket and base gasket, so it's ready for a top end. I'll finish out the X first but I'm looking around for top end rebuild parts. It's not like buying parts for my first gen X. If you would like to exchange contact info, maybe we could help each other out while saving a couple great riders.

This was my first model of trike. They are war horses, and I loved mine.

I did not have alot of ATV knowledge when I owned mine, and you mentioned you had to do rear end bearing work.
I had to replace a bent axle in mine. It was bent so bad that we actually had to cut the thing so we could get it thru the carrier.
I remember having to remove the whole swinger assmembly and press the axle out and in.
I had no manual at the time, and once I ran into the issues, I took the swinger off and went to the local dealer and had them replace the bearings and axle.
I think at the time, the bill was 236 bucks for the whole job, including a new Yamaha axle.

All other items I was able to handle myself. And after the axle repair, it was a soild machine that got me years of enjoyment.

The only advice, I have, is you can put Banshhe hubs on that and banshee wheels and get that puppy widened out a little. It makes a huge difference in rideability on them.

Also, the starter started acting up. I never fixed it, becuase I sold it. But I learned later on, there is a oil seal, in the engine behind the starter gear that goes bad and wicks oil into the starter and burns out the windings.
It started dragging really bad and turning over slow, even with a good battery.
They are fun machines. Mix between sport and worker horse. Good luck with it.
