ive done some research and Ronnies.com parts microfiche the 85 250sx has a 20mm nut and the 86 has a 18mm nut. I found a 24mm socket and its too small. Do i have some kind of rare 1 off machine the nut on mine looks original. any ideas guys?

Yeah...the size of nuts and bolts is determined by the diameter and pitch of the threaded part...not the size of the wrench/socket that fits it...so the 20mm listed for your axle nut is the diameter of the threaded shaft...not the size of the socket required to remove/install it. A 27mm socket works on my '85 SX ...and my ES is the same.
