View Full Version : Nerf bars/nets/heel guards on trikes - opinions?

I am looking for others' input on Nerf Bars, Heel Guards, and nets for trikes.

I want a smaller set for my big red, maybe a full net set up but at least a brush guard style brace for leaning on when I'm out mudding.

But for my 350X, I picked up a set of TRX450 Tusk Heel Guards. Another guy had them on his 350X and I just love the look. Need to trim the fenders, but I'm fine with that as long as there's something there and not a giant gaping hole.

(Hope you guys don't mind me stealing your pictures, will remove if you guys don't want them posted)

Here's a big red set:

I was thinking about the heel guards for my 350X, 450 pegs, and the full nerf bar with netting. I just need to worry about modding it and then making sure the kicker doesn't reach the netting and tear it.

What does the community think about these on trikes?

Thanks guys

It is a really nice trike! I am hoping to do mine in a similar color scheme.

I run them on my R,
I used to not like them actually, This is my first full season on them.

And I have to say, they have saved me more times I can count. Not only do you get protection from other riders, you get a sense of stability/confidence to go with them.

I want to get new ones with 450r pegs built in with kickups.

Keep this going, I was on the other board awhile ago and didn't get no one to respond. I want to do just heel guards on my 250r. But I dont want to trim on tre fenders at all.

Also, ask any of us OTC riders, Most of them run them.

Mine are custom built, others mod up 450r and alike nerfs from squares/ q wads and make them work.

Thanks for the pics, guys. Anyone use them on trail bikes, would be on my 350x and I don't race at all.

I have used them on an 84 250R trail bike - and they not only don;t serve a purpose on a trail bike, but they very much get in the way on a trail bike. it is my opinion that they are not good for trails. I have since removed mine from my trail bike. Nerf bars are used for two things: 1 - giving a larger footpeg for sure footing - this can be accomplished on a trail bike with different or modified pegs. 2 - keeping other racers tires out of your feet - not alot of aggressive passing going on in the trails.

Here is mine

You know how I feel, nerfs keep other guys from jamming into you during aggressive riding. For trail riding, your just asking to hit a stump or get the net caught on something etc etc

Hmm, maybe better left for my 250R if I ever get around to the CR480 swap, then have it as just a snow or ice bike

then when I made it into a 500 I put 450R pegs on it and heal guards

Did the 450r pegs bolt on? and how do the fenders fit with the heel guards?

no the pegs are not bolted on they are welded to the frame, and the nerfs were in line with the fender when it was cut.

I want to see that white and black 350x... It looked like the pegs bolted on. I'd like to get a better angle on the picture because I'd like to set some heel guards up just like that on my 350x build.... Where'd that picture come from....

That's my trike, but that peg/heel guard set-up is for another 350X frame that DIRTCRASHER modified. I only bolted it to the white/black 350X to see if any other mods were needed. The pegs were made solid and do not fold. There is a thread on both that black/white trike and the other frame with the peg/heelguard set-up. I can add more photos if needed.

I thought of them but im a ANY kind of rider. And the lack of area to put the feet to the ground for reverse turned me away right away.

Yea that's another issue. I'd have liked them, but they are probably better left to my 250R for frozen lakes only.

That black and white 350x is so clean and well done it looks like a brand new one off the showroom! Nerf bars will save you from ruts, vines, logs, other riders,etc.. but they are a pain when trying to back up. I have them on my 400ex it does get old pretty quick to have to get off and turn it around. The square looking ones kind of look out of place on a trike but the more triangler ones look nice with the netting in them.

Here are some photos of mine, they are from a cannondale.I still have some brackets to make.

I agree that they are great for racing but could be a hinderance on the trail. for the trail i would just stick with the heel guards

if the you have the nerf bars that are tapered in the front help to keep from bending and axel on the trail... imho. i used to run them on my triz, some old cheapo's from ebay i welded brackets on the front to mount them

Yep, that's a 350x. The owner posted in this thread. I'm hoping to do mine in a similar color scheme, and seeing his just makes me want to do it even more!
