I have a 1982 200e that the recoil only caught some of the time, the battery was bad so I installed a new one and tried the electric start, it spun and then made a horriable noise and now the recoil doesnt catch at all, the starter just spins any help would be much appreciated

sounds like you broke your flywheel key possibly

Could possibly be the flywheel key, maybe it had been apart and the flywheel nut was loose causing the key to break. You will need to take it apart to see, could be something else like a broken starter gear. If the pull start was only catching some of the time then that was just your pull starter teeth , they may need to be greased. They are not kicking out when you puul start it.

Thanks for the response guys, i will dig into this weekend, just a thought on this it will start if I pull it with my 85 big red so the flywheel cannot be broke correct? I have some mechanical knowledge just enuff to get in trouble, just was wondering the flywheel needs to turn for spark correct? Thanks again Curt
