I picked up another 85 R and the motor is shot. It is a solid rolling chassie and I hate to just part it out. I have a couple of Big Red motors that I have been planning on putting on my Oddyssey but I am now thinking about putting one on the R. I like building what never was more than going fast in my older age and I have enough fast bikes already. This would be an agile, comfortable trail rider, with reverse!

Has anybody ever seen one? What do you think?

Big red engine is shaft driven. Not worth the time/effort/work involved. The swingarm, shock + mount/linkage, axle, driveshaft + housing, brake cables etc would all need to be custom.

You could always get a Big Red and put the R front end on possibly, and find a custom rear shock for it.

That would be to easy and you would still have a Big Red. I have already done front end swaps. Custom bikes are suppose to be a challege. That is what keeps everyone from having one. I want the look of the R. That is the purpose. To have that sport look with dependability and reverse.

Get an SX then....

Would hate to see a water pumper get molested to have a ES motor put in... I would sell the roller to fund another trike, if it were me... I have had 2 250R's, 2 350X's, and enjoy trail riding my BR the best... (gotta love the mucky trails with the ES and the mudlites...)

It's a great idea. Rode all day yesterday on a honda 200 (auto) x with a 82s motor. Had a few instances where I would have really loved reverse. The sport bikes are the best trail bikes, but the clutch is a pain in the thick and hilly mountains and streams. The comfort and agility of a light R (x) is the only way to go. The semi-automatic clutch is easier in streams and timberfall, especially riding with a few people where it's tough to stop, slow, climb, and turn. 250r is the ultimate comfort/handling and are stable, with an automatic type drive, near perfect trail machine. Do it and good luck.

If your 85 r roller is in good shape its worth some $$ Instead of cutting it up to get the motor/shaftdrive swinger in I'd sell it and look for a 250sx. Sounds like the kind of bike you would enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kx-9JtEeDg This is a good example of how cool a 250sx can look. This guy has some good videos of it. Either way if you go through with your swap make sure to post pics of your build. Good luck

yeah i agree dont molest the '85 R.. trade it for an x or air cooled R.. plenty of suspension on those.. And what ya gonna do? Run R tank shrouds and no radiators? lol.. thats like having a fiero with a ferrari body kit... or a peterbilt with a chevy 350..
