View Full Version : You know you have too many trikes when...

...a municipal ordinance officer knocks on your door and asks if you're operating an ATV repair business on the property
Apparently, a non trike lover in the neighborhood complained about my brother and I wrenching on the weekends... I miss living in the middle of nowhere :(

nice neighbors. How many atc\atvs do you got? I live in the middle of no where but i have to keep all my toys stuffed in my garage because people rob the hell out of atvs around my neck of the woods.

Holy crap! Really? When did this happen? Just now?
I thought the answer was going to be something like:
.....you have half a dozen chained up and tarped in your yard. OR
..... you consider draining your pool and building a roof over it for trike storage.

Was he cool about it or did he feel obligated to remind you that "them 3-wheelers are deathtraps, and possibly illegal to own"?

You have too many trikes when you spend more time deciding which one to ride as compared to actually riding that day!!

That's the deal here... my brother and I wrench on the weekends, and apparently, that means we're an ATV repair shop  We have 13 in various stages of disrepair, almost all of them in the garage (a bunch of tires and 2 of them are under a tarp behind a tree where they can't "bother" anybody... the guy thought I was "hiding stock" at first)
And Bill, yeah, the guy stopped over an hour ago and handed me the paperwork for applying for a business license!

Matt - that is too funny! I don't think they can do anything about it can they? It's not like you are breaking any laws - well of coarse some neighbors think having fun is breaking the law. What did the officer say when you told him they are all yours?

Well, he wasn't a cop, he was an ordinance officer/building inspector... and he just said he'd take my word for it that I wasn't running a business. Either way, I have to thin the herd to keep them out of the yard I guess... maybe I'll bring a few little ones to Lightning for sale/trade. I just read the PA ATV laws and they are ALL supposed to be registered, either for yard use-free, but have to get a title(titling costs $22.50, plus any taxes owed on the purchase), or general use-get them titled, plus $20 every 2 years *sigh*

LOL
I had nothing about 2 months ago and now I have 7 trikes and 1 quad in my back yard plus the requisite pile of spare atv tires.
I'm kinda waiting now myself for a knock on the door.

That's bad. You have to pay money to the government even though they are for off road use?? We have some bad laws here but I don't think in the UK they can tell you to clean up your yard. The only time it matters is if you put a vehicle on the highway. Does that law vary from state to state?
There is a concession here for farmers - any vehicle for farm use can, within limits, be made road legal for a fraction of the normal amount. Just need to be friends with a local farmer.

thats funny. im waiting for that same situation. im always working on things each weekend so i empty the garage to have room. just 2, 3 wheelers though. '86 350x, '82 185s, 2 polaris trail boss', '03 polaris sportsman, '05 trx 450r, 2 snowmobiles, and now 4 '85 Honda odyssey fl-350s, then 2 sea doo jet boats and a regular boat and then a motorcycle. i had to put up a big half round shelter to put it in. good times though. it is soooo addicting.

My yard is not a mess... only when I empty out the garage for an afternoon, then I clean it up again. It's all about busybodies who don't mind their own business

Well Matt - even when they are in your yard when you are working in your garage - I think they make BEAUTIFUL lawn decorations. Some people just have bad tastes in what looks nice and what don't!

That is too bad.
I heard of a guy not far from here, that lived in a college town, bunch of Liberals; he was cited by the zoning police to clean some cars up. He took offense to that and started to bury them at odd angles, some upside down, others the trunk in the ground. Then he started a Modern Art garden, around the cars. This was right in an expensive part of town.
Well, back to the Liberals. They said no-way; so the guy took them to court. He must have some money; because this drug out in the courts for a few years. He either had a lot of money or a very good attorney, because they were there until he died.
My suggestion: See what the zoning people want and maybe you can work it out.

I agree... maybe I should put some potted flowers on them when they're in the yard?

I would hang a sign for "the one complainer".....NOT FOR HIRE(on garage) and PRIVATE PROPERTY on the telephone pole. It's always the NEW guy on the block too, or the new house on the street. My Dad lives on a street where 4 houses are forsale....they all are selling for under the OVERINFLATED sale price(in a historic DOWNED economy)...some how they've all decided; it was because of the ole'mans 1-1/2ton dump truck parked in the driveway. A letter to the editor of the paper was published....it made front page! The answer to the complaint was as long as the truck is operational, plated and insured there are NO LAWS prohibiting it being on PRIVITE PROPERTY. The complainer is still complaining....like I told him you want to change the laws...create legal language and get 2500signatures door to door, put it on a ballet....and then let the people decide. I find that most people shouldn't throw stones....but those that do mostly have something to hide themselves...(I believe this guys must be in a sexless marriage, too much focused on whats accross the street). 8' fences make great neighbors.

I had Neighbors like that...Key word, had.:D.
8 foot fence was too expensive, so I turned on "my friendly charm" and low and behold, the house went up for sale 2 months later.
My new neighbors are pretty cool, and got the house 29K less than asking price, all due to some "strategic key timing" of ATV riding, during open house hours for the house showing..;)
New neighbors been there 8 years, have a ATC 70, lt50 and a YFZ 450, and play some mean cornhole and darts!

I hate people those nosy b^&&*((())ing type people who complain about that kind of stuff.
If you are a hunter take your skunk sent and pry back the window trim on a car and pour that inside the door. ha!
I wanted to post yesterday about this. They cannot prove that you have a business or not. Here is the perks to CL & Ebay. Do your transaction online then meet the seller in another location. Just leave location blank or use USA when you post something online.

Well for me its when you walk outside and see the shed thinking "hmm which one do i want to get ridable?" i cant buy the real nice ones straight up, but i can do a lil bit of trading to get the mostly complete ones real cheap and work on them. lol
Here is what it looks like, but not to mention the other tri-z in the other shed. lol All need work. but 1 tri-z and the red and blue 200x dont need much besides a few mins wrenching on. All that and plenty of spare parts with a lil over 1200 bones into them.

Same guy that came to you when he replaced his door and couldn't figure out the new one? Same guy that asked you about his pool deck when he was having height problems? Same guy that borrowed some fuel line the other day? Same guy you try to be nice too, and he's just an asshat anyway?
