You know what really sux, Spending 200 plus shipping on a tanks custom paint job, Having 9 months late with no communication, Then having gas eat the paint off like some Wal-mart spray paint. Thanks for nothing but head aches.:wondering Maybe I have too vocal so a little crappy paint would fix me. Im not happy about any of the service provided. I wont mention names because the names are not touchable around here.

Heres the pix, Its all gummy and bubbling. I put a decal around it to stop the bubbling, But it just melted off too. Theres bare metal and fresh bubbles forming, It wont be long befor I start to see the damage forming below the cap. I just put new side protectors on it too. Sure would be nice to get my money back. I noticed the missing paint and though it could be a chip so I added high end # plate back ground in clear to protect the "chip", Not the entire section under the cap is pealing off. the paint is soft and gooey. Im out almost 300 dollars for this tank and Im not a rich man. I have shipping, labor, side protection, and my time(free, But a pain).
Heres the pix:

gas tanks are tough to paint.you have to use automotive paint(real) not can.and it has to cure all the way before gas is added.that will happen everytime if you dont.sucks, because alot of work went into that tank too.

It does suck. I am so bummed out. The paint guy has done several tanks on here but I have never heard of an issue. I understand the complexity of doing tanks, But I paid top dollar for a reputation and certain quality. The quality was alright with a few minor blems, But I could deal with that. Just not a lack of paint as that is what I paid for to begin with.

I've heard of it happening with the best of shops, a problem with the hardner in the paint and it doesn't set up properly. Hope you can get a satisfactory situation.

I am an auto body and customs mechanic and will gladly repaint that tank for you probobly be able to do it in a few days after its in my hands is it just black? its up too u i dont charge mutch cuz i love doing this kind of stuff! Any way i have seen this happen on lots of tanks its all in the prep work alot of guys dont get it scuffed real well around the gas tank fill so when they spray the base it dosnt stick it lays on top so as soon as you pour gas in the tank it gets in beetween the primer and base coat thats why it bubbles. Well let me know i would be happy too help u out.

I am also a custom painter who mainly does bikes, like David said, It's all in the prep work and quality materials. I always sand blast all the old paint/primer completly off and use epoxy primers on gas tanks. If you have any adhesion problems around the filler and gas gets under the paint, your done. Base coats and cheaper primers will disolve when gas hits them causing the paint to bubble. The best protection is to mask off on both sides of the taped edge scuff lightly with a grey scotchbrite and brush on a clear epoxy or JB weld (if your neat with it) to seal the vulnerable edge.
The rest of the paint should hold up to gas spilling, if its automotive. (and it should be for that money)
The painter should do whatever it takes to make it right if he wants to protect his reputation. In the future I would try and locate a local guy who can do the work. At least you can show up at his shop and communicate your issues in person.

And I replied, still have the sent PM I sent you.........
I'm not bustin out the camera now and I'm willing to bet that regardless of the lack of "names mentioned", this topic will go away pretty quick. PALS ARE PALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know if it's hardner, humidity? whatever, I just know my best tank suks and I run a slightly dented OEM one......... And my 350X tank is USELESS.
I was offered to send them back and get them repaired but I'm betting someone got in over his head.................. And don't dry them on cardboard, grass or a fence railing; do that with your possums and alligators.
I don't give a sh!t about "discount service", if you can't make paint stick and coating - coat, then don't do it.
I'm tired of being the nice guy, I have thousands of posts being "MR. NICE GUY" :D
